April 28, 201214 yr Hello. Im currently working on my own wordpress site but once this is done ide like to have ago at creating themes for wordpress. What software do you recommend for creating themes? Thanks

April 28, 201214 yr Its a lot more than just playing around with modules in some editor. You cant just start "making" themes, for a content platform without knowing things like design principles, user principles and stuff. What you can do though is learn. The best way to do that is two simple things. 1. Start at the bottom and work your way up, learning all the time 2. Give it time. Making websites that work doesn't just happen over night. It is a craft, an art. Sorry if I seem harsh, but just giving my honest thoughts. Good luck

To be honest if I was making money from creating the site I would just buy the themes Its a good start when you understand the effort you need to put in Make yourself a site you can learn on, and honestly, if you are committed to learning the craft, then who knows what you can achieve eh?
April 28, 201214 yr Author I did three years of IT and we used dreamweaver to create a website for a project.(That was a fair while back). Im currently working on a website for my photography hobby www.allmarkphotography.co.uk
April 28, 201214 yr Learn to code HTML and CSS, including HTML5/CSS3, fluently, by hand, by memory - first. Then learn how to make WordPress themes. Don't use drag and drop frameworks, they are far too limiting. You're never really in control. Edited April 28, 201214 yr by brightonmike

Teach yourself, learn the areas that you really need to. As Mike said, get to grips with HTML and CSS first, once you can build a static site in notepad then you can think about moving on to things like PHP (which WordPress is based on).

Yeah I covered HTML/CSS at college and very basic PHP but I couldn't use PHP now. This was a few years ago before the new versions of HTML/CSS. As I only have part-time work since finishing college due to the lack of web jobs I get put on voluntary placements but the place I have to go use programs like webplus and joomla so I actually don't learn anything Edited April 29, 201214 yr by Beavy
