April 21, 201214 yr Author Its going to be interesting to see what happens over the next year, the SERP's are going to be crazy while people work out the thresholds and key areas
April 21, 201214 yr I don't think that it's going to be as dramatic as a lot of people are making out. Only the worst offenders who don't stick to common sense and blurring the lines in moderation will probably have the most to worry about.
April 21, 201214 yr Author Personally, I don't think anyone will know what will happen until it actually happens. They're basically suggesting that every tip and trick people are taught in terms of SEO will not be as effective anymore. Keywords in titles etc. I know the whole idea behind is to level the playing field but every website that has had SEO work will drop in rankings until changes are made I feel
April 21, 201214 yr Hmm interesting, so is it unethical to be selling traditional SEO services until more is know about this? Edited April 21, 201214 yr by WBC
April 21, 201214 yr Author Nope, I personally don't think it is. All the information is available on the internet. And as been mentioned, so long as you're SEO is common sense then you'll be fine. I only bought it up because it's going to be interesting to see the SERPs and what the actual tipping points are such as keywords in titles etc.
April 21, 201214 yr Yeah, after reading the link I agree, so maybe I should have read it first but hay it's a Saturday night and I'm living a little bit dangerously.
April 22, 201214 yr Author I think it's a good change and something which has come along a few years too late I think. But yeah, the points HE makes are spammy changes. However, I don't think the changes brought in by Google will be just those.
April 22, 201214 yr Its already out. Ouch. Thats my boss gonna be in a really bad mood tomorrow. Edited April 22, 201214 yr by jamesosix
April 30, 201214 yr Give your websites a good going over before Google introduces their over-optimisation penalty http://www.seomoz.org/blog/6-changes-every-seo-should-make-before-the-over-optimization-penalty-hits-whiteboard-friday Nice vid, thanks. I think Google have been trying to address the issue of 'chasing search engines rather than users' for a long time. Personally, I'm glad they've got around to doing it. This will hopefully improve sites overall and put an end to the stupid 'keyword-stuffed, link-farmed, auto-magically-generated nonsense pages' that I see all over the place these days. I am a bit confused about one issue though - that of reciprocal links. Say you make and sell model subs, you have ten friends who all make and sell models of other things, which your customers (who like to assemble model kits) may well find interesting. Where is the harm in providing links to these on a 'links' page? Will it hurt the ranking of the site if each of those friends does likewise? Looking at it from an end-user point of view - I don't see the harm in this, I do see some benefit actually. Will be watching this with interest.
April 30, 201214 yr Author Google is clever, It won't see a micro link-farm and automatically assume you're doing bad and drop you off the rankings. EVERYTHING is taken into consideration and a few links like that doesn't have a huge effect on websites anyway. There's a lot discussions about this all over the website about spammy websites ranking highly and quality websites taking a hit. Personally, I've seen sites jump up a couple of places and most of my clients sites have stayed where they are.
