I'm just about to create an online shop, is there a site that is best for doing this, and what costs will be involved? I have found this company - http://www.prestashop.com. They seem to provide the service that I need, has anyone used a similar service before, or know of any service I can use to create an online shop?

What software's best for the job depends what the shop is. Volume of products, volume of traffic, what features are needed, is it a pure shop or shop bolted onto a content site?

There are lots of ecommerce frameworks available in the market you need to choose as per your requirement. Cost can be determined only after having a detail project scope.

Well it will be selling one product and yes it will have some content but not a lot, but yes I will need other content. The volume will hopefully be high, and the other pages will be 'about, contact, legal, T&Cs' etc etc.

 

So, a site that can handle high traffic, with high volume of sales, with plenty of features, like customers being able to pay with PayPal.

 

I'm thinking of building the site myself, but before I do, I just want to know if there is any other options...and options that might be better...

those charges are applicable if u open a merchant account but for personal account its free both for sending and receiving

ya if ur just selling one product i dont find any reason to use a whole shopping cart like opencart or prestashop whtever

There's ecommerce plugins for most CMS packages, it just means adding another criterion into the selection of the main CMS.

Every payment system incurs charges, you can't escape that. Different companies charge different rates so one to do is check with your client as to which is acceptable for them

If you're only selling one product there's no point using anything more complex than a Paypal button. Horses for courses.

 

For a heavyweight shop (products in the hundreds to thousands, complex options) Magento's pretty untouchable, but it requires a good solid knowledge of MVC, Zend Framework etc and really requires a VPS with some custom config to perform well.

Hmm ok. So would magneto be hard for me to learn? Even though I will be selling one product, that one product will sell in the thousand easily, so I need a site that will be reliable. I might build it from scratch.

Magento wouldn't be right for this project, unless (and I doubt) you need it's reporting capabilities, in otherwords it's overkill.

 

If Paypal payments are acceptable then stick with a simple Paypal buy button, Paypal gathers sales data as well.
