How long does it take you to design a beautiful 10 pages brochure ? (some images are provided, some are not)

 

If I charge £25/h and if it takes me 4 days, that would be £700. Does it sound realistic ?

is it just design or code,too?

It's for a paper brochure so there's no code.

It shouldn't take your 4 days?! I'd say 2 days and £300.

 

I can't see how it would take 30 hours.

Is the text written already by client?

 

If text is written i can't see it taking 4 full days I also don't see a client willing to pay £700 for a leaflet unless it was some big, big firm.

@Smoothonline : yep, text provided. Certain pages may have somewhat complex layouts.

If that's how long it takes, that's how long it takes. You're bidding the job on your work, not smeone else's - don't sell yourself short just to hit an arbitrary price point.

Yes but the thing is I've never made a brochure before. I just know I'm not a quick worker in general, so 4 days sounded good to me. But it's possible I overestimate the time needed.

I assume £700 does not include printing costs. Id say the price is fair however id be looking at allot more but that's me

If your doing it for the first time ask the printer to check over your work (you can always pass that fee onto the client) things like bleed, alignment etc all need to be checked and ask if he signs it off will he cover the reprint costs for any errors he may have missed in terms of design.

Get the copy checked over by the client at least 10 times before it goes to print and by friends (heck ill do it if you send me the .pdf) first print work I done had 100s of spelling errors even after the client OK'ed it.

 

Find a local printer and get to do you a deal or even up-sell your services etc offer discount each way and where possible id add 6-10% margin on the printing jobs.

 

* I done a 100,000 leaflets once for a client side A was perfect side B due to a typo I moved one element and had not noticed it (neither did the printer) all of the text was out of alignment and fell over the fold lines, every one had to be scrapped and re printed out of my pocket! A VERY hard lesson to learn!!

@pandadoodle : I said 'print' as opposed to 'web' but the brochure will only be published online and emailed as a PDF, sorry for that.. Anyway, could you tell me how many hours would it take you to complete such brochure ?

Without seeing it I can't comment, you will need to do a fair bit of work if your going to be emailing it (unless you mean email a link) as compression will play a massive factor sending 50mb pdf files is a big no no!

Finally and after a few calculations, I proposed to them £420. They immediately replied that they won't require my services this time because this price is « way over » the other quotes they received. Sigh

Mistake No.1 adjusting your prices

1. Never adjust your prices I got a client who tries to get every last £1 off me but when It came to me buying my SL do you think he would take a penny off? No! If they have a business, so do you. You got to eat fella. Go find a higher caliber of client .

 

2. Rejection if the quotes they got where lower contact them in 3-6 weeks

I'm sorry but that price was well over priced I'm not surprised the client said no.

 

I'm designing a DL folded leaflet (basically 6 sides) for my client and estimate it will take me 3 hours approx £140+ depending on print qty.

 

Of course, some of the other guys are right, don't undervalue your work, but if you have no experience and you want to gain experience in print work you probably should start on the lower end of the price scale.

 

I've been working with print design since the beginning of march, I know this price is fairly cheap but it will cover the hours I will work to do the project.

@smoothonline I think you assume too much that people work at the same speed. If you work fast, that's not necessarily the case for another designer. To design a nice 10 pages brochure, you need AT LEAST one day otherwise it won't be a nice job I believe.

You need to remember that while you may have priced your project perfectly, the client's willingness to accept your quote is based on a bunch of factors (like: how much money does the client have, how much do they perceive the service to be worth, how did your quote compare to your competitors, etc).

 

Also, sometimes the client is sold by the pitch, not the price. You should look at how you are presenting your ideas/quotes to the client. Maybe you can do something differently that will convince the client to make the decision to choose you next time. Selling your quotes is one of the most essential but difficult things you have to do as a designer.

 

This is one of those "be patient, move on" situations. Learn from what Pandadoodle said about your pricing and maybe the next one will be yours.

That's exactly what I'm saying? They don't care how fast/slow you work in the sense that they're not likely to be fond of the idea of paying you more because you're slow.

 

They won't sympathise with you saying "I cos X more cos I'm X slower". I can't turn around to my boss and say "I'll do it by next week because I'm a slow worker". If he wants it by Friday he wants it by Friday, he doesn't care whether I'm slow, average, or Linford Christie, so long as the work is done to a time frame that suits him.

The price I stated was based on DL leaflet not a 10 page brochure of course, it would cost more than £100 but £700 was over the odds

If you are just starting off , you could have went in cheap say £75.00 then bumped up the costs by adding 25-30% on the printing costs
