My site has only 160 backlinks, apparently a good optimized site needs thousands. What is a good way to generate backlinks?

There are not that many sites that have thousands of backinks from separate sites. A thousand backlinks from the same site will not be massively different compared to if they just had one!

 

Even those found at the top of Google for terms like 'web design' will only have a few hundred.

If you have a blog you could try writing about something that's not been written about before, or a very specialist topic on your favourite subject. You could be controversial, funny, or simply something that's a darned good read.

 

You probably read blog posts from time to time, notice how blog authors often link to various pages to reference a point they're making. Find one such blog post and ask yourself why they linked to that particular page...

If you want to generate quick back links then you have to do forum posting, blog commenting, directory submission, article submission and social book marking but you have to write quality, original, attractive and topic related contents and don't do spamming for promoting your website.

There's so many different ways to go about it this. But first and foremost, if you are link building to increase your position in the SERPS, then you need to research into your competition for your keywords.

 

If your keyword is 'porn', then you'll need 100,000's of backlinks. If your keyword is 'dog walking and grooming in the middle of newcastle-upon-lyme' then just one or two backlinks will be more than enough.

 

Look at who's ranking above you and check out their backlinks. Then use that as a benchmark.

 

Ensure that, if you do get links back to your website, that your keyword is the anchor text.

 

Now, to the actual linking. You can go the black hat route and buy links, that have **** all value and do nothing more than put a little dent in your wallet or you can be active in blog writing, forum interaction and blog commenting.

 

One good thing about blog writing, with wordpress, is that it pings the search engines so it get's indexed pretty quickly and can rank extremly well for long tail keywords.

 

But you need to ensure that your page is inter-linking well, to ensure the link-juice flows throughout your website.
