Web Designer Forum Team Project

Featured Replies

Wondering if anyone fancies doing a project together, not sure what the topic or theme would be. I guess that would be determined once we have a pool of talented people on board.

We would need to be reasonably well organised with each member taking up a role within the project. Too many cooks spoiled the broth as it were.

Maybe if there was a pool of around 10 people we could break off into 2 teams and come up with separate projects and work together in marketing them both.

Just some ideas. Here's a typical outline of people required for this "weekend project".

1 project Manager

The dude who makes sure development is still moving, touching base with milestones and landmarks. Giving direction as each milestone has been hit.

2 Designers

A mix of Photoshop, XHTML and CSS. Possibly a dabbling of JavaScript / jQuery

2 Developers

PHP knowledge for this one however other server side devs welcome preferable to have knowledge in a CMS or MVC Framework.

Those are the essentials in my eyes for now but anyone who feels they want to get on board and can add skills not mentioned please do jump on the caboose!

We could set aside maybe 5 - 6 hours at the weekend to work on individual tasks set by the project Manager and maybe 30 minutes - 1 hour bi weekly for team chat.

A workflow could be established by using Github or something that meets our team needs.

A wiki for shared documentation and a staging server for development work.

Off the bat it's typical to hear a freelancer say "yeh i'll jump in and do it all" not sure that's the idea of this. I think it would be a good practice for us to hone some specialist skills and force some team efforts.

Cool sounds interesting id be up for that, would this projects be launched into a commercial sector for profit with us seeing a return after X months on the initial investment? If so legal docs would need to be drawn up before hand, or is it simply an exercise run? I prefer the first to be honest but I'm game.

Id happily design and that is all no front or back end coding all you get from me is interesting talks via skype and .psds don't care if im in the "A" team or not ;)

I can PM also managed full scale jobs in commercial and private sector so either or is fine for me.

Investment being time of course and each persons skill set

Are .asp or .net developers not allowed then ;)

Or even iphone app builders and so on lol...

Provided we have a team of "professionals" and not a team of students we would go the legal route looking to launch this as a viable product.

To produce our legal documents we could make that part of our initial meeting. No matter what product we decide to build, provided each member follow their requirements at the weekend we can decide how much stake goes to each member. I think this may be the only time socialism truely works in business. If we have 5 members we keep it simple and split any income into exactly fifths.

With that recipe we can choose a project that is equally demanding to all skill sets.

That's awesome, but a bit of flexibility would be useful. We might need people who are savvy with front-end / responsive stuff. Would you be willing to work on that if required?

r.e. Skillset requirements, anyone who is willing and can offer really. The project will be chosen to best serve the purpose of the team behind it.

Always wanted to do a Android / iPhone app, my skills probably fall a bit short if this is going to be goal driven at only 5 - 6 hours per week.

Ok well I know how the front and back end work so I can design to suit and so on but id be game for anything really if I can help I will If I can't ill try or not nominate myself.

The most vital role here will be the PM everyone in the first meeting needs to be allocated hours and stick to them, no point a designer taking 12 months to get the best user experience then expect the developer to do his/her thing in a day.

I would suggest one legal doc is drawn up the PM posts it to everyone to sign and its kept by the PM once all sigs are on it a copy of the doc is sent off to everyone, so it maybe best to either elect a PM within the group or someone is assigned the role randomly by and external person who has no involvement in the project.

It's a good initiative, but I don't see any solid ideas so far. I have couple of ideas to offer:

1. HTML5/AJAX based CMS and the adaptation of the same for mobile devices.

2. Adaptive/automated fluid website template/framework for mobile devices.

No ones offered ideas yet, just you ;)

I dont think ideas should be discussed in open anyway someone might come across it and beat us to it ;) ... mental note html 5 cms... lol

I'm also up for some design work, but since you have some capable designers already, maybe instead I can do some UX/UI/Interaction Design. That's more my area of interest anyways.

Il be up for this as a front end dev :)

My first idea!!!

Something like tuts+ network :)

will be cheap to set up, and a good money earner, because we could run sites off sub domains, and use wordpress, like tuts+ :D

And we'd have one more place to send people when they ask silly questions that we answer four times a day.

yeh but we would be earning from it :D

educational app for schools / college or uni, to be powered by ipad (stole the idea from click (bbc show) ) but it seems to be the in thing and education sector has money just for training alone ;)

I can be a developer in this project. PHP would be my best skill, so yeah im interested to see where this goes :)

There are hundreds of places like that you can send them to. This would be the first. Do we really need one more nursing portal? How about creating something more advanced like something I proposed.

I love it when people come up with an idea like in The Apprentice and then any other idea is instantly discarded because they want to push their own idea :p

QFTW

Personally i think both ideas have been done to death and we need something smarter.

I was mostly kidding. I think the CMS idea (something designed to be responsive) is a good one. It also would require a wide array of skill sets, and I'd love to work on the UI for the back end.

how about a website that provided users with some kinda search that if they type in any word it would display loads of pages that are similar to there search word?

I think the market for a good responsive CMS is there. People are looking for low-cost (or low-skill) ways to get a mobile version of their site nowadays and responsive is a really great way to handle it. Also, something with an incredibly easy to use admin panel would help out a lot.

This. Maybe with a switch so that it can be turned into a complex or simple admin panel easily.

I agree with you on this one. Something that is simple to understand for beginners.

I personally dont think a low end, quick loading cms is any money winner myself.

Focusing on the mobile market id prefer to work with that group, so much potential there to push the boundaries and do something new

That's what I mean, and also the point, that a lot of businesses are interested in a good CMS, which makes it more solid idea, possibly bringing financial gain. The forum members also are in an unique position to market such kind of product to their customers.

Thats a slippery road what if member A brings in 1000 customers and you member B brings in 1 customer yet B still gets 20% of that sale (based on 20% split between 5 but it should be 15% with 25% for business growth and marketing) you could slack off and live off other peoples hard work and thats how business fail and end up in court...

I agree. If we do mobile apps we absolutely need to make native ones. iPhone users won't accept a non-native html5 app, the interaction just isn't up to their standard.

Watch the videos I posted above then tell me its all been done, unlike the 100,000s + cms out there. Besides when anyone on here asks for a cms what does everyone reply with straight away? Wordpress...

So you wouldn't be prepared to go and learn something new thats going to benefit everyone in the long run then with a brand new skill set? Thats what I thought this was all about.

Not wanting to throw my toys out of pram here, but the internet is training and the days of sitting in front of box have only a few years left in them with con-tactless tech pushing forward, phones getting smarter and faster along with tablet use and so on, I don't think its a market to be shaken off because its deemed too hard. I know plenty of web dev guys who code in C, Java and more!

Everyone jumped on a guy who posted here last week because he wanted to build his on ecommerce software and the vast replies where "its been done to death, why reinvent the wheel" and so on and so on, yet here we all are today thinking a CMS is going to be the best thing since slice bread, maybe I'm the only one looking beyond the web and taking the ideas and considering them as a true business model.

Hello! Can I apply for the designer even if I have not that much experience? I know XHTML and CSS and to implement some javascripts, unfortunately I don't know at all PhotoShop... working on it. I have done some websites but I still fell like a newbie. From 5 July I am full available, and I have to mention that I'm not from UK.

It's too soon to talk about cash, wouldn't you agree? Besides, this problem can be solved by revenue per sold units model or whatever. The main goal is to create really good product, I don't think sharing profits should be the main concern at this point.

Your going into business with 5 people and you don't want to get profits discussed now or even considered everyones holding share in the product? REALLY?

You sell 1 unit and get profits from that, and then someone else sells 1,000,000 units and they gets the profits plus their share of the revenue but don't have to share any of that with you because its based on them selling more units, your really telling me your going to be fine about that even though you may have done all the work to get the item live yet you dont see a single slice of that revenue?

Keep it on topic guys.

If you want to have petty arguments then do it in private, no one here wants or needs it.

I'm out of this idea as of now, it was a good idea for a bit of a project but it's been tarnished. I wouldn't go in to this with people that can't even decide on an idea without squabbling like teenagers.

I agree with Mike, if this thread has descended into bickering then what is it going to be like when we start?

I'm also not sure it should be a 'for profit' project.

If you actually watch the videos and get past the could crap you will see what I was referring to...
