What Pages to Optimise?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm wondering whether optimising every page on a website needs to be done?

I read something recently that said you only need to optimise your index page? is this the case?

Is it still the case that link building back to your site is the main consideration when trying to build google page rank?

Cheers

Carl

Yup, link building is the main thing, but it helps if you build links back to your inner pages rather than just pointing everything to the home pege.

To be honest, the steps for on-page SEO are more or less the same as good content strategy and usability so if you're not doing them there's something wrong with your gameplan.

This really depends on whether you are hunting a long term strategy of stable ranking or a short term boost that doesn't last.

If you want your rankings to last and stand up to others just doing the mass link building then page optimisation is still important. Without it, you're only way to stay ahead is to continually get more links and higher pr links. If you go for lots of links from directory or article sites, chances are they will have a PR of 0 anyway so won't do a huge amount of good for you. On page optimisation done properly WILL help Google understand the relevance of your site against your competitors, compliment this with high quality, content relevant links and you'll do well.

If you just want short term traffic and rankings, then an adwords campaign or viral twittering, facebook marketing and link farming may give you a nice boost, but it won't last.

Assuming you're looking at longer term sustainability of rankings then the former is better. So, which pages to optimize? All of them of course, but being realistically that's a fair bit of time depending on your site's size. Look at prioritising pages in the following way:

top level product or service pages (doorways to product item pages etc)

highest profit margin product pages or services

highest current traffic product pages or services

index page

Why didn't I put the index page top? Google will often return your homepage in the listing anway for a variety of terms that your site is relevant for. Most of the time, your index page is not where the customers interest is and it's rarely where a transaction occurs. From a marketing and sales perspective, you want to optimise your pages with most earning potential first, even if this means only the very basic optimisation of page title and description for your home page.

I use this approach with many of my clients and the results speak for themselves, enquiries come through quicker for these internal pages and their success pushes their index page up the rankings anyway.

Really appreciate your help guys...

Can you point me in the direction of a good SEO guide or checklist?

Cheers

Carl

Try "SEO in Practice", they offer a great and easy to follow starting point for understanding and practising SEO (and it's free). Beware their real purpose is try and sell you software for SEO but they do offer genuine guidance for on page optimisation which you can follow without the software. Their off page optimisation advice is ok but you can probably find better elsewhere.

Try "SEO Book" too, although to get the really good stuff you'll have to pay.

Alternatively just type in "SEO Checklist" and you'll find dozens and dozens that offer broadly good advice.

that you heard is totally wrong. Actually if you only want traffic on homepage then it make sense otherwise you want traffic on more than one pages than optimization of each page is necessary.

Yeah it should be done, Not only promoting your index page will make you good in SERP it requires joint efforts from other pages too, Inner pages also need to be optimized.

Why wouldn't you optimise all your pages? It makes no sense at all.

You need to optimize all pages of your site because now Search Engine will check your full website and after that it will give your rank and position to its listing so you have to do Search Engine Optimization for all pages of your site.

Your index page is of course the most important page. However optimising inner pages will help get your website found under less competitive searches. If you have lots of pages all optimised this can add up to a large amount of visitors!

If you go for lots of links from directory or article sites, chances are they will have a PR of 0 anyway so won't do a huge amount of good for you.

This depends on the directory. For example my directory has about 20 inner pages with a PR4. Directories highly placed on Google should be decent and at least worth a look at!

According to me optimization of all the pages is very beneficial to you because with that you can get the traffic for all the pages. So do optimization of each pages for your website.

Cheers matey that's great..

Hi,

In all honesty some of the advice given on this site seems to come from people whose methods where outdated 5 years ago (and whose own sites are a poor showing of SEO in themselves).

In reality, you should make every effort to optimise your site to 'best practice' standards as possible - that encompasses each and every page of your site.

There is no need to panic and try and do this over night. Start with your home page, and the pages that are within three clicks of your home page as these are (or should be) your most important pages - the ones you really want to rank for.

Work on your site consistently, optimising pages as you go and creating some unique and useful, value adding content along the way.

To get to the basics of SEO you can do no better than Google itself, so I attache Goggle’s own SEO for beginners guide - a good starting point.
