Copying data from website?

Featured Replies

I have been asked a question that I can't give an answer for so I'm putting it to you guys...

I have a friend who is having trouble with a web designer - he has paid the designer in full and he's not happy with the site and wants it changed which the designer is refusing.

Basically he wants to cut his losses and copy all the information written on his site before the designer deletes it. He has no access to the hosting as the designer as also set this up.

Any help with this is much appreciated. I would say to him copy and paste the information to a document but there's quite a lot of text/images, is there an easier way to do this?

The website is http://www.transparencyresearch.co.uk

Why does the client not have access to the server? He should try and get the details.

Also, if the client has paid in FULL then by law he owns the work. Tell him you want the site putting on CD/DVD/Pen Drive etc.

Maybe google "website downloader" and try some of that? I've never tried personally.

Goodluck!

EDIT: With all due respects, the website really is basic in terms of design. I don't know how much your friend paid for this 'designer' but it's not the best IMO. Not really creative and certainly not a 2011 design; More 1999. Just my opinion :)

sounds a bit dodgy. Didn't the client provide the copy in the first place or provide the images?

Quick and dirty way is to do a File->Save As on each page. It'll take a bit of work to reassemble and normalise, but you'll have all the stuff. A better way would be to use something like wget and crawl the site, grabbing & saving resources.

If there's anything dynamic though, he's out of of luck without access to the server.

+1 - Although looking at the site, it looks purely HTML just by the way its set up. (Old school)

haha yes I agree with the design, to be fair he told me he did play around £300 for the site so i'm pretty sure he didn't expect that much, he didn't expect to be messed around though! Anyway thanks for the advice i'll pass it on. Any other ways would be much appreciated.

Agreed Save As will work, except if there is any dynamic coding e.g. PHP etc

Having a look at the page (View Source) I see that it uses a template - so recreating the site wouldn't be too difficult but would be time consuming

I notice from the website that the company is ISO9000 approved - as a former Quality Assurer, I would be asking questions about - how was the webdesigner selected, contract, deliverables etc
