My sites sudden drop in google rankings

Featured Replies

Hello,

I have my main site running harpersdesigns.co.uk (with google ad words) and another www.bullterrierstud.co.uk and they were both on the first page in google searches, now all of a sudden they are nowhere to be seen, all I have is the meta description and keywords, have they given me a pentalty or something?

thanks for any advice

Mike

erm... I just had a look at your site and is this how it's meant to look? Screenprint attached.

lol I'm re designing my wordpress theme, sorry!

My sites are actually back in search rankings now, maybe joining google webmaster tools helped?

Cheers

Mike

Most likely did.

Got my site indexed on google alot faster, so I'm taking an educated guess it did help.

Ah right. I thought it looked like it had all the components of a Wordpress site but without a stylesheet. I just thought I'd let you know in case something had gone wrong and you hadn't noticed! :-)

By the way, a lot of changes are being made to Google right now so things might get a little bit all over the place for a little while. Don't be too surprised if your rankings go up and down a little bit for no apparent reason.

I'd have thought that if your site had already been indexed then signing up for Google Webmaster tools wouldn't have made that much difference. Submitting a sitemap through this tool can help but just signing up doesn't, in my experience, help you rank any higher in the search engine results pages (SERPS)

Sometimes when you're being re-indexed by Google you'll disappear from the rankings. It's happened to me on several occasions. It's nothing to worry about, as long as you haven't made any major changes to your content.

What is known as Google Dance, you can read up on it here; http://www.metamend.com/google-dance.html

Your reference states: "Since August 2003, the famous / infamous Google Dance is no more. Or rather it has become less dramatic. Google now performs updates every week, with most movement occuring on Mondays. These ongoing updates feature mostly minor algorithm and index updates."

It would be interesting for Mike to let us know if his site comes back, when and in what position. Also is your site still found under other searches?

I thought that the Google dance was dead... They update daily and sometimes several times in a day now. not once a month...

I'm not sure what to believe. I have seen so many sites where their index page has been deleted or content changed to garbage, and yet you will still find them indexed by Google for days.

Well Google only crawls pages and indexes them every so often. If they have not had regular updates, Google will crawl those sites less often. If then a page is edited/deleted then it will stay in Google for longer.

Ultimately the Google algorithms change daily, not monthly as previously so the changes in listings aren't impacted as heavily. However, sites are still only crawled as often as Google ranks them (if it is static content which has not changed, maybe only once a month.)

I understand what you are saying. However I think Mike has a static site as he is targeting a specific search. Forgive me if I'm wrong, but a site where the content is constantly changing such as a blog gets high volumes of traffic from getting found under thousands of more obscure searches rather than any significantly large ones.

Actually, Mike has a Wordpress site so I assume it's dynamic. Could be wrong

My assumption is that dynamic sites did not focus on a specific search, and that the mass of content brought in a high volume of traffic from all sorts of searches?

Surely each blog post in a dynamic website should focus on a specific search term. There is an increased volume of traffic over a wider range of search terms because of the range and breadth of content. It is also more likely to be shareable and focussed on what the person was looking for...

In my opinion - each page should be just as focused whether it is dynamic or static...

I understand what you are saying, a static page is likely to only focus on the main terms, whereas a dynamic will have much more scope for the obscure terms through regularly updated content. - but I thought we were talking about the difference caused by the defunct 'Google dance'?
