Testing PHP without server?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Is there any such thing as a website that will test to see if your PHP script is written correctly? I am only asking as I am secretly practicing PHP at work using notepad, but without access to any server I can't test if I am doing it right or not!

Any ideas?

Thanks

Are you on Windows or Mac?

Windows: Download WAMP

Mac: Download MAMP

If you want to start writing some PHP scripts then you MUST have a local server running or you will be forever uploading to test and it becomes a nightmare!! :)

My work computer is very restricted - I don't think that would work and it would possibly be monitored by our IT team. Big brother is always watching... :(

So far I know its either a Apache server or put all the files on a hosting (You could have a seperated section on your website) putting it online manually will be a pest but you can configure some scriptwriters such as Dreamweaver with your FTP settings to do it automatically.

Could you install WampServer 2 (for Windows) or MAMP on a flash drive into a USB port and run from there? It might work, and then you could take it home with you.

When you install one of those programs you have to select a browser as the default to use with it, but that doesn't affect the browser, the selection is contained in the application settings.

@Wickham - No can do with the MAMP server. It wont run unless it's installed directly in the Applications folder.

If I valued my job I wouldn't think about installing anything on the company's PC without permission from my boss and IT dept.

You need to make a case to your boss that you will be giving added value with your newly aquired PHP knowledge.

Otherwise I feel you need to persue it outside of work.

Agreed, you will/could be in breach of your AUP and could be the result of gross misconduct.
