I would recommend you visit http://www.tizag.com . It is a great site for information and support. They have contents form HTML to JS to php.

hi there, i recommend w3schools.com as they start you off with the basics and work there way up... also great for a refernce if you forgot how a certain tag is used etc. I still use it from time to time for my PHP, yes it also has PHP... The site is great haha it has everything lol

I have 3 tips for starting website design.

 

1. Try and learn as much hand coding as possible, Dremaweaver etc are great but without a firm foundation you will get found out at some point.

2. Use the tutorial both on this forum and throughout thre internet to there fullest, there really is some good stuff our there.

 

and finally.

3. Always plan the site out before you start. This might seem kinda silly I guest, but I was self taught and I wish someone had said this to me,you will save soooo much time and bother.

Welcome! I have one thing to say, web design takes awhile to learn, learn the basics first and go up from there, don't try to jump into a project without knowing what you are doing... (I'm still kicking myself for doing that! ).

I also recommend W3schools. If you are new in web designing and development, it's better to start from scratch and learn the basic principles. This would help you to have a good foundation. I took a home learning course about HTML it was a bit pricey but pointed me in the right direction (probably could have taught myself but at the time didnt know where to start), I would recommend learning HTML and CSS as a starting point, lots of good resources for those already mentioned, once you have a firm grounding in those, the sky is the limit.

 

I would also recommend learning a decent Art/Photo package if you are serious about going into the industry probably a good idea to learn Photoshop, if money is an issue (and lets face it, when is money not an issue?) gimp and paint.net are good free programs which will get you use to creating your own graphical assets.

This is really a good career to choose. To start with I personally think you should practice with Adobe products( Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Photoshop) . We have some very good tutorials in our website @ http://www.smartwebby.com/web_site_design/default.asp

I suggest that you try and literally apply your knowledge to real websites as opposed to just making random ones, you'll try much harder with a real website and you'll learn a lot more.

 

What I mean is just don't have loads of 'test.htm' files on your desktop
