Peter Saville for me. He's to blame for first getting me interested in design.

He designed the record sleeves for a lot of my favourite bands at the time, when music artwork could still be appreciated in it's full glory. Not much point die-cutting, embossing or spot-varnishing a CD insert, and as for downloads, well...!!

It's such a shame generations have not, or will not, have the opportunity to ever hold twelve inches of Peter Saville in their hands again. (fnarr, fnarr! Oh Er Missus!)

His use of typography and photography have been inspirational, but he's not so far up himself to give it all that 'I'm an artist, self-expression' cobblers. He designs communication - that's the whole point.

Always loved the work of Storm Thorgerson and Hipgnosis too. Maybe he slips into 'conceptual artist' a bit, but the concepts fit the brief, so he can be excused! I love the whole rock'n'roll excess of his work too - if you want a shot of 700 hospital beds on a Devon beach, take 700 beds to a beach in Devon and take perfectly executed photograph of them - none of that Photoshop malarkey! OK, so the financial might of Pink Floyd are picking up the bill, but they will have made the money back. Sitting in an office with PhotoShop doesn't make a news article, so needs advertising space bought. A monumental and iconic photo shoot gets editorial for free! The costs justify the means if it's handled right.

For a photographer and film-maker, Anton Corbijn is no slouch as a designer either.

Stefan Sagmeister is always good value, and in some ways seems the more excitable and edgy version of Peter Saville to me. (Not sure how either of those would appreciate that though)

It's hard to fault Paul Rand and Saul Bass for branding that stands the test of time.

Alan Fletcher is another that has produced some great branding and some great designs, often with a much needed injection of humour or visual pun.

And not a 'Rockstar' or 'Guru' amongst them!! I'm seriously showing my age now (which isn't that old, well maybe in terms of internet forums it is...)
