Preview in IE 5, 6, 7 and 8?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

If you can help me with this I will love you forever.

I've designed many sites using CSS and always preview through Top Style Pro in firefox, IE 8, Safari and Opera.

After a bit of tweaking of the HTML and CSS I always get the desired result and the sites preview consistently accross all browsers.

However, I went to my girlfriends dads to sort his computer out and then decided to "show off" some of my latest designs. When I opened the site it looked like a 5 year old had designeed it and then promptly vomitted all over the screen.

After inspection I realised he was running IE 6. Whilst I am aware of the pitfalls of CSS with old versions of IE I havre never been sure how to preview in these old versions.

Falling short of buying three new computers and running different versions of IE on each i'm unsure what to do.

Is there any answer to this?

Your help is very much appreciated.

Thanks

OD

Browsershots.org

For all your testing needs :)

Other than that; if you search google for 'Running Multiple versions of IE on one computer' - you should find a few solutions :)

I downloaded Microsoft VirtualPC (free ;) ) and installed an old Win98 disk I had. It came with IE4.

Then I cloned it and upgraded one to IE5, one to IE 5.5 and IE 6.

Think I even have an Win95 with IE3 (!!!) somewhere on my disk as well.

That way I could test it safely with no conflicts or issues with conditional comments etc.

Mind you, I would only try to offer full support back to IE7. Anything older I'd just serve a simple alternative stylesheet.

IE tester and DebugBar - for development. Parallels with separate bootable versions of Windows on the same machine for final testing.

browsershots.corg really worked for me

I m using IETester for this....

lol, I did that, I used to teach in a college (art, not web design) and I was trying to make a really fancy website for my girlfriend with loads of layers and some scroll effects with fixed positioning, tried to show it off to some of the students and it just looked so awful

had to start from scratch and eat some serious humble pie :D

...Also I use IETester and IETab in Firefox
