I am still drooling over coda, but this article made me feel a bit better about my little strawberry shaped friend (smultron)

Thanks for that, I have only just got a Mac and currently have the trial of coda, was going to fork out for it but will give smultron a try, it will have to go some to beat Coda though, I have become quite attached to it.

I gave smultron a go and just couldn't really get into it. In the little time that I did use it, I missed the sleek interface of Coda, as well as all the subtle yet useful features. In my opinion: Coda > Smultron.

I tried both, but I just prefer Coda for it's functionality, which is packed in a simple interface.

It's easy to upload and preview files, work with repositories and the inbuilt image view, file browser, quick find and all the other stuff just make writing code a lot better. I also love the elegant look of Coda, if you're coding for several hours in a day, you need something that you don't mind looking at and are comfortable working with.

Great article.. I used to use Smultron all the time, a great little program but at one point it became too buggy and did annoying things so I swapped to TextWrangler and that too is another cracking free text editor.

Textwrangler is still my weapon of choice, although I'm currently trying out the Coda trial version to see what all the fuss is about. It seems it needs a lot of plugins to do what the free textwrangler does off the shelf. Textmate goes one further again. But so far I'm enjoying using it.

 

Tried Smultron ages ago, didn't feel it. Not in a dirty way. Just a vibe I got.

I prefer TextWrangler over Smultron. I would even use TextWrangler on my Windows machine if it was available (currently using Notepad++ on it).

Anyone had the following problem with Smultron: I was working on adapting for my website a series of html files for a video player that I bought from a company (includes .js files, .php, .swf) modifying it to put in a custom page. After I opened the main php file in smultron, it not only associated all .php files with Smultron, but it changed the "Kind" of file from "Web Document" to "Smultron Document" and will not run. It will give me a box asking me if I want to open or download the document. I just want it to RUN. How do I fix it? I uninstalled Smultron and now I get the same dialogue box, with text.app as the default to open it. Mac OS Leopard.

 

Obvious questions/answers: yes I am sure I haven't mucked it up in some other way, I went back to the original folder of files (which works quite right on my Gateway Laptop) and got the same shabby results on the Mac.

I use coda at work and I never have any problems with it. Which for me is a big thumbs up! I just wish that matching html tags highlighted in the same way brackets do.

I'm amused at the author saying $79 for Coda is expensive, it's a bargain at that price
