Just want some opinions on the sites I've been working on, and their designs. Granted 2 are very blank due to the lack of content, but one has some in there.

Cheers - I look forward to your opinions.

After a few seconds a full screen ad popped up, hung my system for 15 secs - so i quit.

Damn free hosting - I need to find a decent free host and get my files moved.

Sorry Mesa.

Damn free hosting - I need to find a decent free host and get my files moved.

Sorry Mesa.

I really suggest you get a paid hosting account, so that you will ease yourself off this inconveniences. hosting companies has different categories, you can go for the low plan, and enjoy your work, rather than rely on free hosting, check google for a list of hosting companies

No probs, just make sure you sort hosting before going live proper.

Site 1:

It's not a ground breaking site, it's not awful (it doesn't validate) - quite a few errors too.

Also James Harvey - Chief Executive Officer. (are you wearing a school uniform there?) doesn't sound or look good. I also didn't want my email client to load up when I clicked your name I thought it would be a profile etc.

Ditch the text scroller, get the footer aligned properly. Maybe make the login a little less in your face.

Site 2:

Nothing to see

Site 3:

Nothing to see, but what there is there - horizontal scroll bar no no...the grey gradient stops suddenly etc.

If I were you I wouldn't ask for reviews until there's something there to review, this way you're more likely to get decent reviews.

Ok here's a new links:

http://fluxair.x10hosting.com/

http://fluxair.x10hosting.com/nggaming/index.php

http://fluxair.x10hosting.com/shoutout/index.php

Ignore the not connecting to database...not sure why it's doing that, but anyway...like? :)

I like the graphics in all three.

Isn't there a way for you to change the mysql settings to not show errors on the live page? I know there is with php.

Not much else to see yet....

Would just say to watch spelling / grammar eg. Britain's not Britains. I know only minor but influences peoples' opinion I think.

Good luck :)

Yeah, that page was never meant to be shown to the public, hence the difference in page coding ;) (no php include)

Need to get around to making profile pages.

As for the scroller...agreed, was just having a fiddle with Javascript at the time - seeing if I could get a smooth scroll script - nope lol.

Will do with the login page ;)

I will make the page smaller (designing in 1280 x 1024), and also...this site doesn't display properly in IE, this could be the gradient issue ;)

Thanks for the help! :)

Thanks, yeah the MySQL error is due to a host change...I need to find out the server ;)

Cheers, will fix those errors :)

That first one I'm told it's a maliscious site and advised to leave - cheers for the attack!

  • Author

You're kidding right? You REALLY think I'd make a website for personal use, then set it up to be a malicious attack website?

Please...Mesa can testify the content is fine, it could just be the mysql connections...or the hoster ;)

Yeah, that's why I deleted the thread the first time that these links were posted and sent a PM warning James... about it . Maybe its just the free hosting you are using James, but still you should check these things before you post them.

Understood - Molotov, you could've stated it in a less ignorant way, by actually telling me the issue without the snide remark.

I've switched to the host mentioned in the new links I posted (X10Hosting), hopefully that should provide no issues (unless that is the problem child?)

Thanks for all the contributions so far guys/gals :)

I asked for comments - not one rude line off you and the rest advertising, I may not be the best at web design, but rude comments like that will get you no where. GTFO.

Fyi - the font on your website repulses me (genuinely, not just a comeback...)

This coming from someone with the creative ability of sadams toothbrush and hosting off of crap free hosts with more ****ty scripts going off than anything else, Its not advertising if its free, I withdraw the offer for you though your obviously a clueless idiot; my website is very old; www.minutedesigns.com/mdv2 is what the new website is going to look something like... Although thats been on the books for some time now I am abit busy with the 9 jobs i've got on ATM, what about you?

What are you a 12yo ****?

Experience: Intermediate

Area of Expertise: Designer/Coder

Revise it, and i asked if these were sites cos its just an image with abit of text in, which you've just added, no nav or anything, like a place holder.

Perhaps finish something before requesting feedback, and talking about you being 12, your photoshop skills reflect it, do not start getting all "Chav Aggressive" with me and people who "was" going to help you. Seriously you GTFO and Grow up.

You want harsh comments? your coding is so bad it makes frontpage look HTML Strict Valid, seriously?

I nearly fell off my chair when I saw that, how many times you going to close the Body Tag?

Edit: how many times you going to open the body tag? what the hell, its unreal this thing renders in a browser ROFL

And also;

I will make the page smaller (designing in 1280 x 1024)

It would be advisable to code your website to fit in a window of 1024x768, ie making them no wider than 980px.

James. On the first site, when I clicked the link at the top of your post I could edit it, and have done, only to say I shouldn't be able to do this. Needs dealing with, otherwise opens you to attack...

@MinuteDesigns, everyone has to start somewhere, I mean unless you were born with perfect coding and design skills I am sure you were once in the same position, like all of us have been, unsure where to start and just picking up little bits of information here and there...so lets not put down someone who is trying to learn and develop skills. James made one mistake by picking a bad free host, he sorted that out and we have moved on. This section is here to give critiques, as in we say what we don't like and how it could be improved...please try and refrain from going as low as insulting someone based on age, as really that is quite an immature thing to do. Yes fair enough you don't like the sites but at the very least you could have said why. I also think that you have proven that people can improve by looking at the difference between your two site designs, so give the him a chance, he came here for reviews not for you to insult him based on age and him just starting out.

From now on only reviews of the sites please...how can he improve his skills and all that. Thanks

James made one mistake by picking a bad free host, he sorted that out and we have moved on. This section is here to give critiques

1) I did, I said "These are websites" because they are just a image with some text in the middle

2) He's used body tags like div tags, Starting out the worse thing I did was use tables - this is totally different, people who cannot grasp the actual basics should just give in and leave it to people who can grasp the basics. So no using a free host with more banner adds than porn sites top 100 website was not the only mistake

3) he started when I was offering him free hosting, reading it again it does look abit selly, but the point was I was offering him a free hosting package at a worth of £50 a year, and anyone else in his position free hosting.

And my site designs were done on current web trends, infact the MDv2 site is now out dated. I will be coding it towards 2009 trends I think.

It's quite clear this guy has yet to hit puberty, understand the basics of HTML and grasp design.

I'm not quite sure if you was trying to pick fault somewhere with me by saying about the original minute designs site compared to the new one, since your own site has alot of white space itself, and unlike my current site you seem to have spent more time on that than your clients sites. But we're both professionals, both capable of HTML Strict Valid and CSS 2. 2.1 Valid (cant be 3 valid yet because nothing is set in stone) so lets leave it there.

I spent very little time on the original site, in fact its not finished, and it won't be because I agree its fugly, but I just haven't had the time, the only slight holdup on web work was 2weeks when i got some accounting crap out the way then, boom! 1,000 orders a day, I'm sure you've felt the sudden drop of work and now the pick up?

If you didn't see me showing how he can improve then your pretty blind, the only thing to question was the way in which I did it, yet his response in its own right warranted that.

Got one thing to say regarding website critique;

DO NOT POST IF YOU DONT LIKE YOUR HARD WORK GETTING RIPPED APART OR CANNOT TAKE CRITICISM.

That's fact. And yeah I still stick to my original post of;

These are websites? meh.

body tags fixed - it was to do with the php include function, I'd added surplus body tags ;)

Thanks all for the kind feedback. And no MD...I'm not 12 - I'm 14. :)

As for the comment box - that was just a tester ;) It'll be hooked up to the users database ect. a long time before Live :)

On another note...I do have to apologise...I hadn't noticed he was selling it for free, for that, I'm deeply sorry :( .

Also...does this: http://fluxair.x10hosting.com/smfnew/index.php Look better to you? :) I agree the Shoutout and NGGaming ones where pathetic to say the least ;)

Surplus? I think I counted 5 body tags... I would recommend you going to a school or college or even uni to learn HTML, but unfortunately all the people who teach there are retarded morons who use tables and frames and think CSS is Myth and Legend.

Yes I was offering you free hosting, a massive moneys worth to help your started which is why I took immediate offence to your comments. I would not be daft enough to post yeah buy from me on this forum because more than likely it would get me banned for selling, I'm not here to sell my products or services, I've got twitter for that ;)

I cannot link you really any sites to learn HTML from, since they all kinda seem to use depreciated values, maybe someone else can post.

You might want to use list-decoration: none; in your nav list. A list apart might be good for you to learn or use as reference to navs; http://www.alistapart.com/

CSS Play might be useful too; http://www.cssplay.co.uk/index

PS: The only cost I put in was for Domain names incase you was finding it tough to find somewhere that sells them at a decent price or that accepts paypal.

BTW, It's worth noting that with graphics and web design/coding I am 100% self taught, and capable of coding HTML Strict 4.01 Sites that conform to WCAG WAI-AAA. The only thing I did at college was a GNVQ Advanced in Hardware which bored me so much (Since I was building computers since I was 13) And dropped out to work as a PC Consultant at the age of 17 at the UK's biggest Car Dealership Pendragon PLC, which was when I started doing Web Design coding the local Intranet.

Understood - I'm sorry, I pretty much grasp HTML but had forgotten to remove the body tags from the other pages which were included with PHP...hence the issues.

I've decided...thanks to you, to redo the sites with some thought and consideration :)

Don't give up though James these guys ripped apart my first 20 sites! Just takes a lot of practice don't forget they have been at it a long time.

Try reading articles and blogs on web design and just look around for anything tutorial like which will help develop your skills.

James has proven a higher level of maturity than some :cough: minutedesigns :cough: and for that well done.

I wish I knew how to do what you've done aged 14, don't let anyone get you down saying "your crap nar nar de nar narrr" ecetera ecetera. And you've already, quickly, proven that you learn from your mistakes, you'll go far.

:clapping: Mesa is right. I started designing sites when I was 15 and twhat I produced then was terrible..what you have shown here show you have potential and as Mesa has said you have shown you are more than willing to learn. I really hope you stick around and we can see your develop your skills.

The most important lesson to learn about web design is that you will always be learning, you will never know it all, as the web is always changing. You have shown here with your maturity that you have a passion for this and as long as that passion stays you will learn things quickly and become a very very good designer :)

Free hosts are always dangerous, because hackers will host things there becasue its an anonymous places to dump things. I've done it before ;) cough.

Well thanks for the comments all - I will check out some tutorials and get workin! :D

For what it's worth I like the graphics that were apparently so amateur; I haven't figured out the design side at all and am somewhat embarrassed that someone who is 14 can do it and I am 33 :(.

My one year old could prob do better than me lol!

Anyway, we are all human and we respond as treated so I am really pleased to see you all rally round to defend another newbie.

WELL DONE WDF!

Just look at your Avatar, need I say more? infact look at your outsourcing post... "Welcome to the Real World Neo!"

And when I was learning websites a good 8 years ago Flash wasnt out, and Web Standards were not a known thing, if even out tbh, You cannot compare starting to learn HTML and CSS 8-10 years ago like you can now... Hell CSS 10years ago... go figure.

Minute Designs, I am not an admin and I am new around here but may I remind you as it states in the review sticky (http://www.webdesignerforum.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=4605) "These threads can appear on a search engine results for your website or other searches, so if you get negative comments people who search for your site may see these."

You aren't being very professional, if a potential client was searching the web and came across the posts you have been making I'm sure they would reconsider hiring you.

Just a thought.

James.. I echo previous critiques, and try and make a bit more use of the space.

Just look at your Avatar, need I say more? infact look at your outsourcing post... "Welcome to the Real World Neo!"

*yawn*

Flash has been out since 1996...:o sorry to prove you wrong there.

As for css that has been out for years and years. Tim Berners-Lee (I'm sure you know who that is) wrote a browser that supported style sheets but never published it in the very early 90's. Other browsers in the early 90's also included a slightly toned down version which only let people change colours through a style sheet. When w3c was established...was that in 1993 (EDIT: looked it up it was 94 I was close) they took interest in the idea of a style sheet, and developed it further. If you want t go as far back as I can think for actual css support IE3 was the first major browser to have css support, that was released in 1996. Although you could argue about IE5 for a mac (1999) being the first real one, as that had the best compatibility for css1, but hey it was out there when you were learning.

Plus how the hell would you know how hard it is for someone to learn something today? Just because you understand it now, as lets face it you have had 8 year or so of practice so if you didn't understand it by now I would be worried. Much like I have had 10 years of practice so yes I understand it, but so what, who cares about how long we have been coding and creating sites. This might surprise you but this isn't about you and how long you have been coding, but you seem to think you should keep bringing it up. James has been learning this for a month, so why should he fully understand everything now, yes he has made mistakes but its not as if he has 8 years of learning it behind him like you do.

I am sure over those 8 years you have learnt new things, developed your skills and gotten better at your craft, so why the hell do you feel the need to belittle people that are just wanting to learn something that they have an interest in? Then again I think I am just talking to a brick wall when it comes to you.

Well, you can't ignore that minute designs site is pretty good, but yeah... Validation errors and a very unprofessional attitude, and the claim that you're some kind of superior to everybody here... You got owned minutedesign.

I'm sure now minute design will try to make personal attacks, calling out flaws in other peoples designs, or pointing out mistakes in their wording, anything to avoid the issue. I've dealt with people like him before, its best to ignore them :)
