Working on a project and want to use a mongoDB for parts of it. Having trouble finding a host that will allow it to be installed without being on an expensive dedicated server though. Anyone know of a host that supports it? Ideally on shared hosting while its being developed and in beta or something thats not too costly. If the site takes off then I'll move over to vps or dedicated but in the early days I don't fancy spending £80+ a month for a small amount of users.

not bad for a tight budget, don't think the background works though. Maybe have a look at using the original background on the new layout. Just tried it using firebug and the look is so much better in my opinion.

Sort the cats and sub cats from the db in to UL lists and then use something like this... superfish plugin or google for dropdown menu tutorials, theres tons out there

Was just reviewing my stats and thought someone on here would find them useful. Questions about what browsers and resolutions to cater for tend to pop up quite a bit so maybe this will help. Something to bear in mind though is that your own site stats are always the best way to judge who you should be designing for. These stats are for a retail based comparison site. delete the p and put an x there What is it's purpose? How are you using the script? Where do the letters p and x come from? You've used variable $page, could you not do something similar or create a function?

I think you've definetely hit on some good points, especially regarding script optimisation and static content (I'm using PHP). Hadn't really thought of the two as being better off seperate if the situation calls for it. I'm noticing a lot of delay when processing the image cache script, which I fear needs throwing away and starting from scratch. I didn't write that so don't mind admitting its a bit rubbish Might be worth looking at a seperate image server. How much impact do you think require's and include's have? At the moment the MySQL statements seem ok for current purposes although I can imagine they aren't scalable so will put that on the todo list.

Anyone know how hosts rank in terms of real-term connection and processing speeds? Got a website that has most of its slow performance coming from the initial connection and processing of scripts. Mostly from the scripts though. The scripts themselves don't seem bloated enough to cause slow downs from what I can tell. Also, any good resources for checking script optimisation would be good just in case

I've been using flyhigh.net for development work and low bandwidth sites. For £20 a year you get 500mb and 25gb bandwidth along with a load of the usual stuff like php, mysql db's, ftp accounts, addon domains, etc. Can't complain for the money and haven't had any issues with their support. Best advice is to have a good look around and read reviews like others have said. Very easy to find a host that looks good and later find out its some guy with a bunch of servers in his home cupboard running it off broadband (I know someone that has done this!). most important thing to look for is good support.

agree with James, why would you want to do this? The only times you'll want to use tables are for displaying tabular data like you find in spreadsheets. And if you are displaying tabular data, why is it in div/css to start with? ...and to answer your question. I've not heard of any software that can convert like that as you'll probably need a custom script.

This is a good example of why having a solid contract in place is so important. As you've mentioned there is no contract for your website you're going to have to rely on emails and verbal agreements. Go back through your emails and see if there's anything relating to timescales, etc. Basically, anything that would illustrate they haven't kept up there end of the deal. To be honest, if you have no contract and haven't paid any money then he doesn't really owe you much other than wasted time. One other thing I would think about is IP and whether he could legally profit from your website if you just walked away from it. My personal advice would be to treat the two as seperate and determine who owes who first. From what you have said it seems quite clear that he definetely owe you money whereas, without a website, you owe him nothing. I would look at sending him an invoice for the full amount with a deadline of 14 days. If you don't receive anything by the dealine, go to the small claims court. Also, it can be quite helpful to speak with muscle for hire... I mean a bailiff and see what they say. They deal with collecting money all the time so know exactly how to crowbar money out of people, figuratively speaking. The best solution would be to work out an agreement you're both happy with in person. In times of legal dilemas I turn to these people to point me in the right direction UK law Q&A. Great for a quick bit of cheap advice from a professional.

Any of you got some recommendations for good file sync software? Just need it to do the usual syncing of files between my desktop, laptop, portable drive and also web server if possible. I'm currently using filezilla for FTP but I find it's not too accurate at highlighting files that need updating. Not a big deal though but would be nice to have it included in syncing software. The most important thing is to have syncing I can rely on it!

depends on the whole site (and the company of course), wording of your content and especially your portfolio of work. The design is good but I would want to be confident you can A. design to a brief B. handle whatever is asked of you and most importantly C. deliver on time.

a pretty unanimous no to the question so far. A friend of mine has one and I must admit it is pretty nifty. Although holding it is actually quite uncomfortable. At £600 for 32gb mem, wifi,3g and no built in USB its way overpriced. Thats Apple for you though, they build 'premium' products, which means high margins. A cynic may say they had no plans for a tablet until HP mentioned they were building one, so rushed out the ipad by making a big iphone. I'm not convinced tablets are anything but a niche market.

How do you think a mac rates as a development platform. Was thinking of getting one but only really have limited experience of them from the design side. Like the idea of not having a tower under my desk. Can a php/mysql server be setup easy enough like with wamp or xamp?
