Web Design Head

Are there any printed web design magazines that are available now in print? I used to get .Net magazine but it stopped printed publications at the start of the coronavirus. There used to be Web Designer also but it's stopped publication. Just wondering if there were any survivors?

I usually lose 1 in 2 quotes. It's because I cannot compete against those who have large teams of in-house web developers. Being a designer and sole trader I have to outsource my development work to a company who charge wholesale prices but yet is still higher than some of these companies. For example, my average e-commerce system price is around £3,500 - £4,500. But companies are now selling BESPOKE systems at around £2k max which includes all the design and discounts/p&p etc. I couldn't afford to do this and would make a loss. It's a difficult time with other web design companies devaluing our industry.

Hi, I'm here. 12 years experience of design (Masters graduate in Web Usability and Ecommerce), been freelancing for 6 years. SEO knowledge is in-depth also and I design and build based on the target market type.

Agree with Mesa, don't undervalue our web design industry. The idea of losing contracts to some newbie kid who is undercharging by at least 50% horrifies me (although most of the time, the clients see that they have employed cowboys or lightweights and end up coming back to the professional agencies and dipping their hands deeply back in their pockets).

What I usually do is ask the client what sort of budget they have in mind for the project. 50% of the time, they come up with a range and you're probably likely to get the job if you come in at 20% above their price but offer them something which is of a perceived great value to them. I have to charge VAT also. I have sold brochure sites of 5 pages with CMS for around £1200. I am usually more expensive than other because I take full pride in my appearance at meetings: suit, shiny shoes, briefcase, deluxe business cards and serious good-looking fountain pen. It's about perception. If you bring out a beautiful folder with THEIR logo on the front, they'll know you mean business and feel comfortable they are not dealing with some student or part-timer. They usually choose you over the cheaper clients. I know of web designers who have awful approaches who just keep shouting at potential clients about SEO and seem to divert from the discussion of the design and the content of the site itself. If you can make clients feel relaxed and don't go in like Zippy out of Rainbow then you get your full price.
