Our own bespoke CMS
Hi all We've been developing our own unique CMS for the past 16 years! Over this time we've upgraded our system, added new features and made sure that all our new websites are fully HTML5 valid. Even our own website is managed using our own content management system. You can view videos of the features of our content management system on our site. We are currently looking into developing a 'dummy' site were we will give users a 24 hour login to have a play with our system. I'll be posting any links to this in the near future! Thanks for taking the time to look. Brickweb

What do you think of my website?
Hi Conor I've just recently finished my Computing(BSc) Degree at Leeds Metropolitan University (graduated in July). A small, but powerful bit of code that I picked up was the 'required' tag in a form field. The 'required' is a feature of the new HTML5 language. Adding this bit of code to the form on your 'Contact me!' page will make sure that at least something is entered before the user submits the form (not letting them submit an empty form) You can then work on adding other validation techniques. <input type="text" name="name" required id="name"/> Also, don't worry too much about gaining a work placement year - I worked straight through my 3 year degree and came out with a 2:1 degree and I'm now working full-time at a web design company in Lancashire. If you ever want any advice don't hesitate in contacting me Good luck! Luke

Better than Magenta and WordPress...
We have designed our own Content Management System - and many of our users have called it better than Magenta and WordPress! What do you think? Can you see any improvements that need making? We are always looking for feedback and any way in which we can improve. Brick technology Ltd

Will duplicate TITLE and DESCRIPTION tags effect the SEO of a site greatly?
Thanks for the reply. Your information is sound. I'm currently working through removing any devalued links using Webmaster, and have started to tone down on the keyword anchors (although there weren't many to start with!) I will look into the uniqueness of the page titles, but a lot of the errors are directed from the site's forum and the page titles that relate to that. Will Penguin take the forum titles into consideration? Regards

Will duplicate TITLE and DESCRIPTION tags effect the SEO of a site greatly?
Hi all, I'm doing a general 'tidy up' of one of our sites and was wondering if the duplicate TITLE and DESCRIPTION tags we have as issues would have a great deal of effect when it came to the pages rankings and the SEO. Penguin 2.0 hit us pretty hard and I was just concerned whether this issue of the duplicates was effecting our rankings? Looking forward to the suggestions.

Google Adwords Quality Score
I agree with the previous post... if you are getting good conversions then don't worry too much about your quality score. However, the way to improve your Adwords quality score is to have a well defined ad with for example "London Lofts" in the title of your ad and the keyphrase optimised on your landing page. For example make sure that "London Lofts" is the page title, have a minimum of 250 well written contextual words on the landing page, Use "London Lofts" at the beginning of the text and close to the end. Your adwords ad should then run consistently for approximately 3 - 4 weeks in order for the quality scoring system to take proper notice and improve your score. btw... also Google does not use the "keywords" meta tag

What makes a website to be seen like this in Search engine
Yes, they are called Site Links... if you login to your Google Webmaster tools account you will be able to see if Google has indexed any site links. How the algorithm works I don't exactly know, there are no "cheat codes" to do it, a good content rich home page with top level links with good titles leading to quality contextual content seems to do the trick. Search for "baby mattress" in Google and you will see our client come up tops with not only site links, but actually the site link titles we wanted. Have tried this with a lot of our clients and get different results... so will be watching this topic in case someone else in the forum has had success and would like to share.

How can I sell a domain name?
Brickweb has used Sedo for years now without any conflicts or problems, we've bought and sold using Sedo's service. However common sense also has to prevail (there are other sites that do similar) .... Didn't think much of the valuation service, looks like they just run it through some automated system and charge $ for it. The brokerage service wasn't that great either when we paid to try and buy a couple of domains that weren't actually seeking to sell. So use your common sense and like anything else, shop around and get it out there in as many places you can, putting your domain up for sale on Sedo isn't the only service, but I've found it to work for basic buying and selling, we have had tens of thousands of pounds of transactions with them over the years and the support you get in completing deals has been great. btw, if anyone would like to buy... scotlandhampers.com , scotlandhampers.co.uk , truflex.co.uk please visit http://www.sedo.co.uk

Drupal vs Joomla
Thanks BlueDreamer, I know you're right, was hoping for some utopian answer... like in the old days of betamax or VHS... or recently with Bluray and HD... was hoping that there might be a Microsoft of CMS on the horizon... but I guess no substitute for hours of hard slogging research... I'll get on with it! btw, if you're an anorak like me and in the UK... I can highly recommend watching this... http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00n5b92/Micro_Men/ Its the story of Sinclair, Acorn, BBC computers some of the things are fact, some others take with a pinch of salt, but it was great to watch... funny how history repeats itself. Thanks again.

Drupal vs Joomla
I'm about to start playing with one of these Content Management Systems. It looks like it could be my homework up until Christmas 2009. As I haven't got time to get immersed in both systems... which one is best? I'm looking for a powerful platform that covers all the essentials of a great "control panel" for our customers (especially e-commerce). There seems to be an increasing supply of "plug-ins" and I like the (purported) ability to upgrade the platform as time moves on, so that client projects can be upgraded without having to demolish and rebuild as new techiques and technologies emerge. So just wondered if anyone had been on a similar journey and could give me your comments and advice? Shall I start with Drupal or Joomla, or is there something much better out there?

Google Caffeine
Hello,I wonder if I can start a thread so we can discuss what is different about Google Caffeine? I know this is probably old news to some of you... In the last few months, a team of Google employees have been working on a top secret project: the next-generation architecture and algorythm for Google's new web search. It is Googles first step in the process to try and rival Bing with increased indexing speed, better accuracy and a more comprehensive set of search results. The new infrastructure sits "under the hood" of Google's search engine, which means that most users won't notice much of a difference in search results right now. But experienced web developers and power searchers will notice a few differences. Give it a try at http://www2.sandbox.google.com/ and see what you think. I'd like to discuss and learn what the differences are? I can't really see a lot, I do know that it is showing different results and have heard that a lot of old SEO bad habits (black hat techniques) are being more accurately screened out. So, just wondered if we could post any news, information or secrets here?

Video Conferencing and Virtual Meetings
Thanks Clearcut, I'll take a look at these, but after a weekend of "playing" I have found the Microsoft Live Meeting 2007 seems to fit the bill, I've now got a 30 day trial from http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/livemeeting/default.aspx so will give it a good seeing to. Along the way I will take a look at your suggestions. Thanks again.

Video Conferencing and Virtual Meetings
Good morning, I've been trawling for several days now trying to find the best solution for our 4 offices to collaborate with each other and clients. I've looked at Webex, Windows Meeting Space and a number of others. (Hard to compare like with like) Webex seems a bit involved for some of our novice clients and some of the other solutions seem to be really expensive. IM Solutions such as messenger, skype etc would be okay to chat with your Gran but not suitable for professional conferencing. The solution has to be easy for the client to click and participate. We have installed Logitech PRO 9000 Webcams everywhere and we are impressed with the picture and sound quality. So in short, looking for a solution for our 4 offices Canada, Ukraine, UK (2) with a potential for 18 personnel to participate and collaborate and also an easy solution to have our clients join in. It looks cost prohibitive to buy 18 licences from some vendors so would probably start off with the key team members (10) Any suggestions, tips or advice please?

Google - "link:www.mywebsite.com"
Thanks, the space made all the difference!

Google - "link:www.mywebsite.com"
I wonder if someone could help explain this? When I type in to Google "link:www.mywebsite.com" it doesn't seem to accurately show the number of backlinks/inbound links that I think are listed on Google listed sites (sites I know that are listed and ranked in Google that I can definitely physically see a link placed there)... however when I type in "link;www.mysite.com" it shows more like the real figure I thought it should. So what is the difference between using ":" (colon) and ";" (semi-colon) Any ideas please?
