We have a site built on an old version of umbraco (www.yourlocallink.co.uk). When the site was developed, the company didn't really know what they wanted and the developer by his own admission, wasn't a designer. The end result met the company's needs but as the years have ticked on those needs have changed quite dramatically and we now need to look at updating. The developer has said the original umbraco instal has been heavily modified so simply updating the install isnt an option. My boss's latest plan is for me to find out what I need to know to be on a reasonable footing to learn how to develop for umbraco (hence this post). The umbraco site itself says a client side (css, html, javascript) knowledge is all thats needed but I cant believe it's that easy. Can anyone fill me in on what I'd need to learn prior to learning how to work with umbraco, what I'd need to learn about umbraco to work on a custom built site and if any of this is possible to self teach? I'm under no illusion that this is not something I can learn in a week or even a month. I know people spend years at university learning ASP.NET etc.. but I'm keen on the idea of learning as much as I can while someones paying me to do so and so any advice would be greatly appreciated. I've been asked to build an ecommerce site based on a theme which runs on woo commerce. That's the easy bit and I'm reasonably happy with the project apart from payment gateways... The last e-com site I built took paypal payments and that was fine but the client on this one is wanting to take credit / debit card payments too and tbh, I'm lost with it all!! I can buy an SSL certificate with the hosting company (vidahost) which seems to be the bare minimum for the paid for plugins such as paypal pro but the likes of sagepay have much greater security requirements which I'm really not sure how to go about achieving (ie PCI DSS certification)? Firstly what is PCI DSS? and secondly, do I need to worry about it or am I much better off just sticking to the likes of PayPal Pro?

At work I use a Mac Pro with a 24" apple monitor and my time is split 75/25 between editorial print design and web design. At home I use a 27" iMac and my work is about 50/50 between web & print. I often find myself wishing I had a PC laptop to test sites on.

This is something I'd be interested in finding out about too.

You could always try starting off with a book? I found The Definitive Guide to Magento was a huge help when trying to get my head round how it all works. Read through it once, then read it again but build a dummy site as you go and iI'm sure you'll be more than happy with the results.

Hello all, I'm Dave from York. I've got a good few years experinence in design for print, publishing and editorial design but have always wanted to put my qualifications in digital multimedia to better use. Over the last year or so I've been "re-learning" html and css (when I learned code first time round it was all about tables!) and starting to learn jquery, with the aim of eventually moving over to full-time freelance web development.
