  1. As to reliable and cheap VPS, Linode is always on the top list of my recommendation. DigitalOcean seems a nice option, too.
  2. +1 to namecheap ! Price is reasonable. Service are great. Already moved all my domains from Godaddy to namecheap !
  3. Reliable and fast hosts will not be cheap ! If you are serious about your online business, try to use a reliable web hosts.
  4. PayPal is OK for most of the cases. Credit card payment can be served as a second choice. PCI DSS stands payment card industry data security standard, this should had nothing to do with merchant aside.
  5. Google webmaster tool and open site explorer are pretty nice tool for backlink checking. One-time payment SEO desktop software from link-assistant also worth a try.
  6. It is not easy to give actual number of each aspect. What i can see is that the off-page factor is not treated as important as its before. I have observed several competitors which ranked in top 10 within only less than 20 backlinks(not authoritative). They did a great job for implementing on-page SEO. Personally, I will give 7 out of 10 to on-page SEO.
  7. Personally, I do not think Drupal is an ideal solution for ecommerce, Drupal is most used for content site, although it can be used a shopping cart system, but it is not recommended to. WordPress is suitable for small business with less than 500 products. Zencart, Opencart and Magento are pretty nice options for medium-to-large corporations.
  8. 1. There is no need for a CMS if just want to a login page. A simple PHP script can be used for this purpose. 2. If you want the customer adding content themselves, it is highly recommended to design a cms with graphics admin panel, or use existing cms like wordpress, drupal. Most of the clients are not familiar with code,so avoid it as possible as you can.
  9. Magento is the most sophisticated shopping cart cms I have been used. It is OK to install and add new products, but it is a little hard to figure out how it actually works. I reminded that there is a beginner guide on its official website, but it aims for store owners, not the programmer. If you want to hack the source code, the first things you need to do is to get familiar with PHP. Then pick up a good book to start with. P.S Magento is not the ideal shopping cart for small business.
