4colourprogress reacted to The Lonely Pixel in Why do people use templates and claim them as their own.Took what I said out of context. My point was that templates have very limited usage, as soon as you get a client that wants something bespoke you're up ****'s creek without a paddle so the "designers" that exclusively use templates have a very limited customer base. Mainly those who have "little to no knowledge of the web".

4colourprogress reacted to The Lonely Pixel in Why do people use templates and claim them as their own.Templates are only okay if your client has little to no knowledge of the web. If you're dealing with a large company that want a bespoke CMS + front end using wordpress and you sugest a "premium template" they would throw you out the building.
Agree with O.P, posting in the web design section for a review when you've only edited a template is bull****.
-
The real limitation with templates is that they're not bespoke. They're generic. The design is generic. It's not targeted, or directly relevant to the business and audience.
Use a template, and you're getting a website that's never going to be as effective as a well executed bespoke design.
Templates undermine the fact that design is more about aesthetics and function, it's about the audience. Everything that is designed is designed for an audience.

4colourprogress got a reaction from oakleaves in what's going on with Freemly.comCan I offer a piece of advice?
It might be better if it displayed the users username around the site rather than the users real name as they might not want that shown.

4colourprogress got a reaction from MikeChipshop in How is this done?I believe it's called a Parallax effect, but more importantly I wouldn't worry about learning that and focus on remaking your portfolio as it bears an uncanny ressemblance to this website

4colourprogress got a reaction from funsella in Forum PostingWhen I was in year 6 I had a huge crush on this girl at school and one day during class I was admiring her as usual when suddenly sticky thread came out my boy parts. It was shocking and I had no idea what was going on, panicking I decided to wipe it on the back of this kids head that was in front of me to which he he turned round and looked at me with a glare that pierced my very soul then came the fatal words "MISSSSS".
I knew I was in trouble so I ran to the cloak room and hid under some coats knowing full well that adults wouldn't be able to find me because I was invisible and started to cry, unfortunately even though my hiding skills were freaking legendary I forgot that adults had very acute hearing and it wasn't very long before she stumbled onto my hiding place and sent me to the head teacher.
Sitting outside I was nervous and scared, wondering what kind of creature the head teacher was. I looked round for anything that could be used as a weapon but alas there was nothing. The door to her office opened with a slow creek as this blonde chick with huge cans emerged from her den of evil. She asked me what I did and I explained to her that the sticky thread was the cause of the problem we then went on to have sex in her office and I lost my V at age 11.
The moral of this story? Sticky threads get you laidddddddd.

4colourprogress reacted to AldrichCarl in Why my site isnt on googleI have seen your website's source page, I think the problem is that there is no description meta tag in the webpage, and title and keywords are too long according to Google guidelines.

4colourprogress reacted to annalan in footer image floats rightHi,
4colourprogress:
The problems lies in the html divs, footer is part of content, so even if he will put background on footer it will still have same effect.
hashstar:
take a look at you index.html where it displays correctly. You need to close <div class="content">....</div> before <div class="footer"> starts. At the moment your footer is part of the "content" container thats why it doesnt spread in the width of container. Hope that makes sense. If you have problem with that send me your html and I will correct that.
BTW, floats can be left, right, inherit or none

4colourprogress got a reaction from hamed63 in design learning from zeroThere are really no "professional" books for web design, HTML & CSS can be picked up fairly quickly the actual design part comes from experience and practice. Once you have a foundation built just keep making websites until your design skills are up to scratch.
I already knew html so not sure about any books but I got this one for CSS

4colourprogress got a reaction from D.Schuster in Mjölnir webdesign beta 0.1"when you read something on your computer you subconciouslly follow it with your mouse pointer, or atleast move it there, we use it to focus on stuff, those users that will look at the slider will hover over it."
If working in print has taught me anything it's that you should never assume. Always tailor your design to the most basic of users, if you don't you will be alienating your client base.
"And I'm saying that I always run every design I make by atleast 10 people, to get a sort of idea on how the mjority will react, and changing the overall design due to one person not agreeing with it would be madness and an infinite loop of editing."
Lol I'm not saying you have to change the design I'm merely giving you a suggestion on how you could better the site by fitting it round a theme, take it or leave it.

4colourprogress got a reaction from D.Schuster in Mjölnir webdesign beta 0.1I'll go first,
Home Page
1) On the home page you can scroll down slightly? If your website design is fixed to the browser view id remove the sidebar completely as it's not needed.
2) Not really feeling the enlarging menu items as it's not very smooth and looks clunky try using -webkit-transition to smooth the animation a bit.
3) The slideshow is way too fast no one will be able to read that! The type on the 3rd slide is also too small and difficult to read in that font.
4) Again with the slideshow your inner circle and outer circle don't match perfectly and it bugs me, the drop shadow is also too pronounced.
5) The position of the ribbon that reveals the social icon is in a weird position and doesn't sit right with me? Is it even necessary as it seems a bit overkill to only hold 3 icons, there's also no way of knowing it's there unless you hover over it by mistake.
About Page
6) General layout looks rushed and no real thought has gone in to the presentation of the information.
7) As you don't have a footer the page just stops half way down on my browser and a third of the screen is just white dead space.
Contact Page
6) Again think about the presentation as it looks messy
7) The dotted effect round the outside of the container is different to all the other pages, try to remain consistent.
General
To be honest I don't really like the background you have chosen as it just meshes with content too much. Also you've gone for the name Mjolnir? That's Norse mythology right? If you are going to use something like that why not base your whole design around a norse concept because to be honest your site looks too bright and colourful I'm not really feeling the norse aspect... feels more like childrens TV.
Those are my two cents anyway interested to hear what others think

4colourprogress got a reaction from Ashley Byrom in WordclockHi Ashley! Awesome! I love the word clock but yeah so expensive, I like the design of yours with the word search kinda feel and the slight glow on the characters is pretty
The only little thing that doesn't sit right with me is that is says AM/PM all the time, so now it says "It is twenty to 9 AM"
Seeing as it's a word clock that you read as a sentence it just doesn't flow for me, I think the only time I would use the AM/PM is bang on the hour so "It is nine AM".
I think the target audience is mostly adults and most adults know whether it's AM or PM unless they are drunk... or on drugs... or retarded.
Like the idea about turning it into an iPad app

4colourprogress got a reaction from Psygnosis in CMS for photographersI think your best bet is to just use buddypress, bp album+ and S2 membership (for premium membership)
You're not going to get a pay-per-view system without extensive knowledge of scripting languages and building it yourself.
Try to tinker round the the above and see what you can produce.
