  1. Other than the criticism offered above, I think it's very good for the first try. As for coding and making it fully functional, this would be fairly easy, there are tutorials on how to do it online. It's a relatively simple process, but it can be time consuming.

Thanks, I'll try this out after work tomorrow

    What exactly is your question?
  4. Is there any particular aspect you think needs adjustment?
  5. Today I decided to make a new homepage for myself from scratch, I'd like to share the result. It's currently a static page, but it will have recent blog posts in the middle column and possibly cycling images in the large image. Screenshot attached.

Each of the 5 columns is floated so that when the page is viewed on a narrow screen, such as a phone, they become arranged in a vertical layout, I probably should have mentioned that. Obviously the first method won't work with this, but what about the second?

I've been working on an online planner for school pupils, just as something small to work on and to help me learn. On the pupil timetable page it will show work due for a specific period as for the maths period on friday here: https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B0CzimKn6FczZTJiNzQwZjUtYjVjZC00NWRjLWI5YzctNGZhYmRiNTNkODc3 (ignore the colour scheme :S) what I would like to do is make all of the columns expand to the same height when additional items are added to a period. Alternatively ideas for other ways to display the information would be appreciated. Thanks
  8. Thanks everybody who's given advice, sorry for my lack of response, I've been busy with school work and things, but now the year is coming to a close I have more time to work on this. This seems like a really good idea, I might try that, thanks
  9. I want to start doing web design work properly, semi-professionally at least, at some point. I have a couple of problems though: -I don't know how to build up a proper portfolio. -I find it hard to keep motivated/focussed on one job. I have some idea about the first one, involving working with an established designer, doing work they don't want to do. Though I don't know if this would work or not. For staying focused, I have no idea, and it seems to be linked with my general lack of motivation to do anything at all just now
  10. Floating elements aren't that complex, I wouldn't say they were complex at all myself...
  11. I was wondering what that was about, makes sense now!

One morning after a party, I woke up with my laptop sitting open beside my bed. When i woke it up from sleep mode, there was a nice greyscale design open in firefox, far better than anything I've done before. In the background there was the source open in Notepad, and going by the comments in it i was struggling to type a bit. All I remember is getting home at midnight and sitting with my laptop for an hour or two, not what i did. Anyone else have an experience like this? (Before anyone says anything about drinking at my age, I was drinking responsibly, to begin with anyway. And i bet you weren't any better when you were 15)
  13. My first site has (thankfully) faded into obscurity, I can't even remember what the domain name was... It was a horrible frames-based thing with a lot of nonsense text and not much else :S
  14. To make a site like Facebook you would need quite a lot of knowledge and experience with PHP or another server-side language.
  15. This is the first design I've done for anyone but myself, and is also the shortest time I've done one in (It was just an idea at 1pm yesterday, and was more or less finished by 6pm). It's hosted here: http://bakabroadcasting.freehostingcloud.com/ I know free hosting isn't ideal, my friend who is running the site knows that, but we'll be upgrading as soon as our combined funds will allow, same goes for a domain name. (Just a quick question, in the "Meta" section of the sidebar, how do you stop Wordpress from outputting "Valid XHTML"? It wouldn't be a problem as I'm working on fixing the issues, but some are to do with the Twitter widget, and I don't know how to fix them)

I prefer monster really, the cans are bigger and it tastes better. Red bull did help me stay up for nearly 2 days once but near the end of it i wasn't really aware of what was going on around me other than on the screen in front of me.
  17. I have had a Wacom Bamboo for a few years now (at least 4 since i remember using it when i was in 1st year), but I don't use it as much as I used to, for many things a mouse is just more convenient. How much do you use your? If at all?
  18. I've removed the gradients, and will work on the nav when i get back from my exam, which i need to go to now...
  19. I've made a few changes, there's a demo of it here: Demo
  20. Been working on this for a couple of days, probably 4 hours total work really: How does it look? It's fixed width and I've built it entirely from scratch with very little need to look at tutorials or help, which is a first. I'm still learning mind you, so it probably isn't great, in fact, i know it's not great.
  21. Hehe, the reason I'm not fixing that is because I'm working on a new theme from scratch, the errors aren't anything major anyway. For a tenner I could have it done by saturday/sunday ANDit'd be valid html, because when I do stuff for other people I actually check first *facepalm*
  22. I could do that for you, and probably make it using database driven php if needed since it's not too complex. How cheap is really cheap? I'd be willing to do it for £10-20 on the condition I get credit in the footer, it's win-win, you get a cheap site and i get some advertising. Reply if you're interested, I could start work today if necessary.
  23. I'm 15, from Scotland and i'm (re)learning web design and all that goes with it. Ever since I was 9 I've had some form of hosting to muck about with sites on, though until last year I didn't really do anything terribly impressive, and to be honest i still haven't. In 2009 my friend started a website for photoshop edits that was fairly popular, then at the beginning of 2010 I helped her re-do it in PHP and from then on it was me who did most of the behind-the-scenes work and helped out people she hosted sites for. Now the site is long gone after our host closed down without much warning earlier this year and we've gone our seperate ways. Now i'm trying to start doing some web design work in the hope i'll eventually get paid for it, being only 15 and thus still at school is a bit of a double edged sword, it means it doesn't matter if i don't make much (or any) money but it also means I have less time to work on things. I have a blog, though it's mostly full of nonsense. At the moment it uses a theme that I made from an HTML template (which i then found out there was a premade wordpress version of) though I'm working on a new theme which i'll use once it starts looking nicer. This has turned into a lovley post about not really much at all, hasn't it? Oh well.
