Other than the criticism offered above, I think it's very good for the first try. As for coding and making it fully functional, this would be fairly easy, there are tutorials on how to do it online. It's a relatively simple process, but it can be time consuming.

Today I decided to make a new homepage for myself from scratch, I'd like to share the result. It's currently a static page, but it will have recent blog posts in the middle column and possibly cycling images in the large image. Screenshot attached.

Each of the 5 columns is floated so that when the page is viewed on a narrow screen, such as a phone, they become arranged in a vertical layout, I probably should have mentioned that. Obviously the first method won't work with this, but what about the second?

I've been working on an online planner for school pupils, just as something small to work on and to help me learn. On the pupil timetable page it will show work due for a specific period as for the maths period on friday here: https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B0CzimKn6FczZTJiNzQwZjUtYjVjZC00NWRjLWI5YzctNGZhYmRiNTNkODc3 (ignore the colour scheme :S) what I would like to do is make all of the columns expand to the same height when additional items are added to a period. Thanks everybody who's given advice, sorry for my lack of response, I've been busy with school work and things, but now the year is coming to a close I have more time to work on this. This seems like a really good idea, I might try that, thanks

I want to start doing web design work properly, semi-professionally at least, at some point. I have a couple of problems though: -I don't know how to build up a proper portfolio. -I find it hard to keep motivated/focussed on one job. I have some idea about the first one, involving working with an established designer, doing work they don't want to do. Though I don't know if this would work or not. For staying focused, I have no idea, and it seems to be linked with my general lack of motivation to do anything at all just now

I was wondering what that was about, makes sense now!

One morning after a party, I woke up with my laptop sitting open beside my bed. When i woke it up from sleep mode, there was a nice greyscale design open in firefox,far better than anything I've done before. In the background there was the source open in Notepad, and going by the comments in it i was struggling to type a bit. All I remember is getting home at midnight and sitting with my laptop for an hour or two, not what i did. Anyone else have an experience like this? (Before anyone says anything about drinking at my age, I was drinking responsibly, to begin with anyway. And i bet you weren't any better when you were 15)

My first site has (thankfully) faded into obscurity, I can't even remember what the domain name was... It was a horrible frames-based thing with a lot of nonsense text and not much else :S

To make a site like Facebook you would need quite a lot of knowledge and experience with PHP or another server-side language.

This is the first design I've done for anyone but myself, and is also the shortest time I've done one in (It was just an idea at 1pm yesterday, and was more or less finished by 6pm). It's hosted here: http://bakabroadcasting.freehostingcloud.com/ I know free hosting isn't ideal, my friend who is running the site knows that, but we'll be upgrading as soon as our combined funds will allow, same goes for a domain name. (Just a quick question, in the "Meta" section of the sidebar, how do you stop Wordpress from outputting "Valid XHTML"? It wouldn't be a problem as I'm working on fixing the issues, but some are to do with the Twitter widget, and I don't know how to fix them)
