  1. I've written a short article on what I think are some of the simplest and easiest ways to help improve SEO. I'm interested in what you guys think and would appreciate any comments! View the article here http://toddhosting.com/blog/10-simple-but-effective-seo-tips/
  2. To download Wordpress visit http://wordpress.org/download/. A CMS allows you to create users who can easily manage the content of your website without having to have any knowledge of coding at all. I use Wordpress as a CMS for a lot of my clients, and would recommend it, as it is relatively easy to set up and create a template for (providing you know html, css, php). It has many plugins which work well with it, including gallery plugins which may be of interest to you.
  3. I'm no expert in website security, but this article provides a good start to understanding some of the main hacking ideas. A SSL certificate would be used to stop data being intercepted when being transferred over the internet, rather than protect directly against hacking. Following the DPA isn't exactly hard or scary, it's just a matter of following set guidelines and procedures designed to keep personal information safe and to give legal rights to the people who have data stored about them.
  4. That css should work, maybe your class is inheriting styles from elsewhere. Can you post a link to your website? or the .css file you are using?
  5. No worries, but please don't take my advice as a given! As I said, all the information you need can be found on the ICO website. See this webpage HERE "The Data Protection Act does not define the security measures you should have in place." There is nothing in the DPA saying you have to have an SSL. It just states that you use appropriate security measures for the size of your organisation and the type of data processed. It is the data processor (you) who is responsible for the data security. It's always a good idea to make use of salt or md5 but they can still be hacked, as can any other password. There are other ways to gain access to a site than just sql injection, so you must have a way of responding to a breach of security (view this page)
  6. You can find all information regarding the DPA at http://www.ico.gov.uk/for_organisations/data_protection.aspx In short, any data protection/processing must follow the 8 main principles: 1.Personal data shall be processed fairly and lawfully and, in particular, shall not be processed unless – a ) at least one of the conditions in Schedule 2 is met, and b ) in the case of sensitive personal data, at least one of the conditions in Schedule 3 is also met. 2. Personal data shall be obtained only for one or more specified and lawful purposes, and shall not be further processed in any manner incompatible with that purpose or those purposes. 3. Personal data shall be adequate, relevant and not excessive in relation to the purpose or purposes for which they are processed. 4. Personal data shall be accurate and, where necessary, kept up to date. 5. Personal data processed for any purpose or purposes shall not be kept for longer than is necessary for that purpose or those purposes. 6. Personal data shall be processed in accordance with the rights of data subjects under this Act. 7. Appropriate technical and organisational measures shall be taken against unauthorised or unlawful processing of personal data and against accidental loss or destruction of, or damage to, personal data. 8. Personal data shall not be transferred to a country or territory outside the European Economic Area unless that country or territory ensures an adequate level of protection for the rights and freedoms of data subjects in relation to the processing of personal data. Point 7. is relevant to this point. You would encrypt the data to ensure it is not stolen or destroyed. You can do this by using a number of methods, eg SSL certificates. Point 3. You cannot store any personal data that is irrelevant to the purpose for which is to be processed. So all personal data you store, such as phone numbers and addresses, must have a purpose otherwise can be deemed irrelevant and not in accordance with the DPA
  7. It's your css that is causing the issues, not the php. For example delete line 99 (position: relative;)
  8. delete sorry
  9. I tried your code and it seems to work, can you upload your site so we can see it in action? EDIT: or at least post the stylesheet
  10. You are missing some of the closing "s eg: echo "<div class=\"grid_9 push_3\>"; should be echo "<div class=\"grid_9 push_3\">";
  11. Use the code below in a .php file: <?php // This must be at the file of the file if (!isset($_COOKIE["visited"])) { // If the cookie doesn't exisit (i.e. first visit) then set it $cookie="notset"; $expire=time()+60*60*24*365; // Cookie expires in a year from visit setcookie("visited", "true", $expire); // Sets a cookie named 'visited' } ?> <html> <head> </head> <body> <?php if ($cookie == "notset"): ?> Put the code for the pop up here <?php endif; ?> The rest of your site html goes in here.. </body> </html> Let me know if you need any more help!
  12. It's kinda hard to know what's going on without being able to see, just post the link to the page without http://www.
  13. itodd replied to mania112's topic in Frontend
    Use PHP, can be done relatively easily
  14. Use this site, http://www.tizag.com/mysqlTutorial/, will explain it all!
  15. A cookie would be your best bet, or you could log people's IP address and only show the popup if their IP isn't in your DB, but this wouldn't work for for multiple users from the same IP such as from the same house or a library etc
  16. No worries, happy to help
  17. change your #content css to this #content { float: left; padding: 10px 62px 10px 10px; width: 630px; } and #main .entry to this #main .entry { clear: both; padding: 10px 5px; font-family: Georgia, serif; }
  18. I posted how to fix this above
  19. dropdownmenus.php is a webpage.. not a command. You can use this on a html page. Add this to your stylesheet .css file: #popup { color: #000; background-color: #c0c0c0; } #popup a, #popup a:visited { position: relative; display: block; width: 130px; line-height: 30px; text-align: right; padding: 0 10px; margin: 0; border: 1px solid #666; text-decoration: none; font-size: 1em; font-weight: bold; } #popup a span {display: none;} #popup a:hover { background-color: #e9e9e2; } /* the IE correction rule */ #popup a:hover { color: #f00; background-color: #e9e9e2; text-indent: 0; /* added the default value */ } #popup a:hover span{ display: block; position: absolute; top: 0px; left: 170px; width: 320px; margin: 0px; padding: 10px; color: #335500; font-weight: normal; background: #e5e5e5; text-align: left; border: 1px solid #666; } and add this to your .html file where you want it to appear <div id="popup"> <a href="introduction.php">Home<span><img src="littleegret.jpg" alt="Little Egret"></span></a> <a href="dropdownmenus.php">Dropdown menus<span>Further information:-<br> Only one link can be opened (the one on the menu button), no links are possible in this panel.<br> Use dropdown menus for several dropdown links.</span></a> <a href="links.php"><img style="padding: 2px 0 0 0;" src="images/beetle50x50.jpg" alt="beetle"> <span>Icon instead of text menu button which could be an image button with text on it.<br> The code isn't intended to work with an icon but it does work.<br> Only one link can be opened (the one on the icon button), no links are possible in this panel.<br> Use dropdown menus for several dropdown links. </span></a> </div> then edit..
  20. Ok no worries, if you need any help with anything else (hosting, learning to code etc) just give me a shout, will be happy to help
  21. When you say you are having trouble moving posts into the center of the page do you mean the padding on the left of the post is too big? if so you have it set to 68px (#content in style.css) on the second page you might want to remove this bit of code: #main .post { margin-left: 100px; } and remove the margin-top and margin-left from this part of the code #main .entry { clear: both; padding: 10px 5px; width: 618px; margin-top: -80px; margin-left: -60px; font-family: Georgia, serif; }
  22. Yeah it looks nice, but the header banner and bar across the top look unnecessarily big. The whole design seems a little too blue and dark, no other colours to be seen anywhere. The navigation is looks good. I'm not a fan of the weird borders around the boxes either, makes it look 'techy' and outdated. Do you really need your facebook and twitter icons twice? The middle box in the footer looks odd, so much empty space
  23. Just a suggestion, maybe start with something a little easier and learn the basics of html and php first?
  24. Try using one of the pre-built jquery sliders you found and then overlay a partially transparent .png image (with a gradient of 0% -> 100% transparency) over the edges of the containing div to add the 'fade effect'
  25. It looks fine to me in IE both in normal and compatibility modes, and I used IE 9. I think the grey is just right and I like the background texture. The red is ok, but maybe make it slightly brighter. And I'm glad I could help with the footer
