Set the line-height to the height of the containing element.

Hi, What do you guys think to site wide links? I have a lot of contacts with sites, that I could *persuade to give me a site wide link. In the past i've seen good results from these, but i'm hearing they're a bad idea. How at any point could Google penalise for such links? They have been around since the start of the web!

1. Gradients can work, and look very modern if done correctly. Never fade grey to a colour, just looks plain ugly imo. 2. Give your right column some padding, text should never be touching the edge of its container. 3. Content area generally needs more breathing space, and more contrast (lighter bg) as already said. 4. Top area seems pointless

Photoshop is an amazing bit of software, but for vector support I've always found it hard work. Fireworks really is the king for clean vector layouts, FACT!

Hmm if you're on a budget, surely a Mac isn't going to be affordable? You've kind of got your priorities with the spec the wrong way around. RAM is very easy to upgrade, and cheaply too, so don't let this be a deciding factor. Get a Core2Duo, you'll be future proofing it as best you can. I'd also say the screen is important, get at least a 1280x800 screen. For a programmer this is a bare minimum.
