February 22, 200818 yr Hi, Now that business is goin well (in a time of "economic hardship" apparently) I am thinking of sorting a new laptop for when I pack off to uni in September. My specs are: - lightweight, under 2kg if I can - RAM is the most important factor, i can live with a small HDD and processor... - OS is not important - budget is "cheapest" Anyone got any suggestions, cos otherwise I'll buy a Mac Air and turn it to *nix in front of an Apple fanboy...
February 22, 200818 yr Hmm if you're on a budget, surely a Mac isn't going to be affordable? You've kind of got your priorities with the spec the wrong way around. RAM is very easy to upgrade, and cheaply too, so don't let this be a deciding factor. Get a Core2Duo, you'll be future proofing it as best you can. I'd also say the screen is important, get at least a 1280x800 screen. For a programmer this is a bare minimum.

February 22, 200818 yr I'm thinking of getting this one: http://tinyurl.com/2b8asx Personally for a designer the screen isn't big enough, but I can easily plug it into my 22" monitor when I need to. RAM is something I can build up and I think the rest of the spec is pretty good for what I need. I want a laptop to replace my desktop over the next few months and also as it's portable, I can work wherever I want to and moving house isn't going to stress me out as much.
