Like u said logo could be better but that comes with practice.
Nav is simple but some people like it that way.
With the slider i dont quite think the big page icon in the middle. Maybe you could just have the dots above the caption secto with no border. (thats my opinion)

Contact page is perfect wouldnt change any of that.
 
The idea bout going to local charties is a good shout, specially as some will prob have the do it urself templates.(found that with some i done)

How about a off white background with a textured design?

It's a decent site, but you need to work more on styling. The current effects are simple and clean but i think you should change the color of the menu and the footer.

On this occasion I'd say the brown fits the theme you're going for.
Walking is very 'earthy'

Why not try going for solid colours and/or gradients, and not have any textures? I reckon that would work well.

As someone who has frequently sought honest opinions on their work, I am always grateful for any feedback offered, and will always try and take on board that advice. Especially so if the criticism is genuine and constructive. I'm one of those who has little chance of hearing informed opinions on the work I do, unless I ask in appropriate forums, as none of my friends are into web design, and my wife isn't either. When I ask for honest feedback, I would be disappointed if someone softened the blows by holding back. That goes for anything I do.
 
I guess the constant barrage of new members asking for critiques of their work could be seen to be annoying to regular members, especially if the requests have been posted in the wrong sections. The prospect of hearing professional opinions on my (amateur) work is what drew me to this site though, and I suspect many more were drawn for this reason too?

What I would suggest is, for now grab a decent image of say a country lane or hills etc etc. This site may be worth a look: http://www.sxc.hu/ .
 
Then take photos as you train and participate in the walks and replace them on the site or have them rotate on a slider.

have you asked the charities whether they have anything?

1. phpmyadmin will likely be your best friend
2. MySQL Workbench will be your best friend's sister
 
Just check both those softwares out. Do you know about normalisation etc.? It's very nicely explained on Wikipedia and other places.

You may want to use foreign key constraints - but you can only do this if you create the tables with the InnoDB engine, rather than the default MyISAM. InnoDB also has a proper implementation of transactional sessions and the benefits of row-level (rather than table-level) locking.
 
Foreign keys are useful in relational databases. For example, say you have catalogue items in various categories, then FK constraints enforce the "sensible" rule that you cannot delete a category if there are items still remaining in it.
 
Another scenario is establishing a hierarchy of tables - for example, you have a generic Items table listing all your catalogue items, and various specific subtables which provide supplementary information, like Books which contains ISBN number, author and title fields. A FK constraint can be imposed so that if you delete the item from the Items (parent) table, then the same entry (identified by matching foreign key) in the Books (child) table is also removed automatically.
 
Depending on what you're doing, FKs may be useful.

I was on my iMac - it's much cleaner without the scan lines.

Building your own computer doesn't require that much skill, providing you buy compatible parts, most things will only go in one way in the correct slot. Gone are the days when you had to set jumpers for clock multipliers and FSB speeds. The most boring conversation I ever had was in a pub with a guy who 'built his own computers' and he was acting like he was some kind of computing prodigy.
