Google Pagerank takes a long time to build up, and is based upon many factors (the true algorithm isn't actually known). Some important things are the content of the domain, amount of backlinks, age of the domain, etc. If you buy up the domain and completely change the content and start losing backlinks as a result, obviously this will have been a poor investment. The point is that the transfer of ownership won't cause the decrease in PR, but rather a change in the content will. If you're buying a high PR domain, make sure that you're getting the content as well.

Web hosting is an extremely complex industry, and the amount of 13 year olds starting fly-by-night companies that fail after a month gives the industry a bad name. If you absolutely must continue with this plan, for the love of God, do not start hosting clients who rely on you for their website to remain operational until you have considered these things: Do you have a business plan? Do you know how to secure a server to prevent rootkits, injection attacks, etc? Are you of a legal age to file Articles of Incorporation? (unless you want to be personally liable for any lawsuits or damages that may float your way) Are you prepared to operate without profit for at least 6 months? Do you realize you will be competing against thousands of others who are selling the exact same thing as you, but have been doing it longer? What is your niche going to be? What differentiates you from the other web hosts? I'll stop there. Now that I've got that out of my system, I recommend this: start with reseller hosting - don't go and rent a server (if that's what you were considering). When you have questions, your web host can help you out. Slowly you'll gain experience and can move to bigger and better things (VPS, dedicated server).

Where did you come up with 2%? Who says he has to? If anyone is willing to take that risk, it's their own fault if anything happens. No contract is being signed by either party. Give this guy a break, he's offering something for free. HostGator is also one of the most highly praised and well known web hosts on the planet. As long as CPU and inode usage don't become an issue, they have never been known to pull the plug on a customer without valid reason. Uhhhh he was getting defensive?
