C A R got a reaction from bijutoha in SEO strategy for new websitesWhen it comes to link building, avoid low quality links. They are not worth your time and they are likely to go against your SEO efforts. Aim for genuine, higher quality links. Consider genuine link opportunities with other people within your industry.
Keep the code of your website clean and tidy. Ensure headers are appropriately wrapped in header tags, and try and ensure every page has a clearly identifiable header and amount of body copy.
Ensure your content reads well. There is little use having a website ranked at the top of a search engine if the content is poor and puts people off. You'll just get a lot of wasted visits. Make your copy as SEO friendly as possible, without compromising on the readability.
I've written a few more SEO articles here http://sozodesign.co.uk/blog/seo/ which hopefully you find useful, and might give you a few more pointers in the right direction

C A R got a reaction from BlueDreamer in Problem with Google regularly changing which pages to indexThanks for the response I'll ellaborate on the issue I'm having as maybe I wasn't clear enough before.
I am actually deliberately trying to get Google to index pages other than my home page for particular keywords. For example, if my web site is about cakes and I want to target the keyword "wedding cakes", I'm trying to improve the SEO optimisation for my 'Wedding Cake' page, in the hope that Google will choose this page rather than my home page. This would be a much more effective and relevant landing page for the user searching for "wedding cakes", rather than the home page which presents lots of options that are not necessarily related to 'Wedding Cakes' specifically.
I'm succeeding in getting Google to find pages more relevant than the home page, however the problem is that Google indexes a page other than the home page and then moves the listing back at least two or three pages! I'd rather have my home page on Page 1 of Google rather than a slightly more relevant page being on Page 4 - it's like I'm being punished for not cramming all my SEO efforts into the home page.

C A R got a reaction from BlueDreamer in Problem with Google regularly changing which pages to indexHi there,
Over the last few months, I've noticed a recurring issue with how Google indexes a lot of my web sites that I do SEO for.
Quite often, I will achieve a Page 1 Google listing for a web site and the page indexed for this result will be the home page. Then, times goes on and sometimes Google decides it has found another page on my web site that is more relevant to a keyword than my home page. It will then use this page instead, HOWEVER my listing then gets knocked back at least 2 or 3 pages.
I'm finding this very frustrating. Ideally, I'd like Google to find the page on my web site that is most relevant to a keyword I'm targeting, however I'd rather it didn't if it's going to then move my position way back.
Has anyone else experienced this before? Can anyone explain why this happens and how I might go about avoiding it?
