Is it necessary to use " when writing a "
It does work on other sites/servers. The comment I made about my text editor was down to my ignorance. It (AceHTML6) preloads the doctype and encoding statement and it wasn't until I 'turned professional' 8 months ago that I bothered to take any notice of it, particularly now with this problem. I can change the doctype and encoding. To illustrate the problem I've put the same page on three different servers i.e same doctype, same coding; links below. www.wordpainter.co.uk/pages/sap2.php (Fasthosts) www.wordpaintershop.co.uk/catalog/sap2.php (Heart Internet) - (ignore the warnings and scroll down to the text) www.staylor-design.com/pages/sap2.php (Local server) The local server is the one I'm having the problems with. As a matter of interest I also had problems with png images on this server and had to use jpegs or gifs.

Flashbacks to the dialup age!
I've still got my Amstrad 6128 and it still works, although I had to replace the elastic band on the disc drive. Tons of public domain software, still got two boxes of 3 1/2" discs. Pity cpm didn't survive, would have been far more stable than windows.

That article is useful, explains something which I've taken for granted. I've printed that and the linking articles off for future reference. It also appears that the server can have an effect. I've Web Sniffed the page and the server uses utf-8 but will still not accept my pound sign with a charset of utf-8. Everything else but! ampersand, dollar-sign, hash. I've emailed the client to ask his host company if they can shed any light on it with server settings. In the meantime I'm using GBP. I'll let you know the outcome and many thanks again for your help.

Is it necessary to use " when writing a "
I'm in uncharted seas now. My documents are usually saved as charset=windows-1252 or iso-8859-1 automatically by my Html editor. Are you referring to the declaration above the doctype? How do I find out the encoding the document is saved in? They are saved as php files. I've tried changing the charset to windows-1252 and iso-8859-1, both with the same result, the black diamond. Experience dictates that it is something very simple... I've changed it to the integer sign for now(which does register!!). I really appreciate all your help.

I appreciate the response but I've tried that. Also tried £ Here's the link Site link Look at the bottom paragraph where it mentions £60.00. If you see the pound sign all well and good, I need to sort my browser out. If you see a question mark or a white square, then that is my problem. Checking the source shows the question mark where the pound sign should be. I used £ . This isn't a problem on other sites.

I'm experiencing something similar with the pound sign. On one particular server I cannot get the pound sign to register unless I physically alter my browser's encoding to Western European windows. I currently use windows-1252 character set for coding, which has caused no problems so far. Can servers influence the web page encoding? I've tried all the different forms of coding My concern is that whilst I can change my browser's encoding, most visitors may not even be aware that they can. I've tried changing the charset to utf-8 with no success. Can anybody help?

Please review My Logo
Hi bamboo, welcome to the forum. I think the bamboo concept is good and could maybe extend it to all of 'Bamboo-Media'. I'm not sure about the open 'B', your eyes fall off the back rather than follow the words. The co.uk looks as if its been tacked on and could really be dropped. The small print needs working on, you'll not see it if you need to shrink the logo. i.e on a business card or even a letterhead. Suggestion - do all of Bamboo Media in bamboo and drop co.uk. Underline it and have WEB DESIGN underneath. Too many capitals shout at you and lack interest. But the concept is good and worth pursuing.

critique needed for church website design
I'm with FizixRichard on the content. Without knowing what the content says, its hard to judge the impact of the images. The general layout seems ok and the page seems well balanced. The only quibble I would have is with the blue overlaps at the edges. Almost as if you've forgotten to trim the wallpaper off.

design contracts
I would agree with BabyBen in that a contract should be used in all cases. That way 99% of the bases can be covered - nothing's perfect. I would also argue that from a customer's point of view, it adds that extra touch of professionalism. I got my legal forms from simply docs (www.simplydocs.co.uk). For a nominal fee (£41) you can download any number covering a specific area for a whole year. You then customise them to your requirements. They also post updates on your account area, which you can download for free.

Meta Tags?
My problem is that all my tags are on one file (header) on my site. I use php includes on every page for the browser to include! the header section. But because my meta tags and keywords are only on one file and not every page, does this affect the search engine indexing? Do the search engines render the pages or just read the files as they are?

CSS eCommerce solution
I've used Zen Cart and found it very adaptable, once you get the hang of the template system. Its written in php but don't let that put you off, there's an extensive user-based forum to cover most of the possibilities. The style sheets also cover a lot of ground. There is a book available which covers the admin side of Zen Cart and, whilst useful in parts, I wouldn't buy it again. I outsource my hosting and use Fasthosts and Heart Internet. The latter I use for E-commerce, Fasthosts charge too much for the extras. Installation shouldn't be a problem with a good FTP client. I use AceFTP 3 (Its free). I did look at Oscommerce but decided against it, more to do with the php coding than anything else.

Hello...Guys.
Let me explain. One of the problems I am constantly coming across is people phoning up and asking me how much I charge for designing a web site and expecting a price off the cuff without them really knowing what they want, let alone me. I thought Mani was alluding to having a set price for designing a business web site. 'Strings' alludes to the common reply of "How long's a piece of string?" Ie, how big or complex is the web site they are asking for? And having determined that, price accordingly rather than, for example, a per page basis (ie, per inch of string), although I appreciate these days, price per page is not generally used.

Best web desgin software for starter
I currently use AceHTML6 pro, a sort of upmarket text editor/html editor. You do need to learn basic html coding and css. Web Plus and Net Objects are all very well but you should know what's happening under the bonnet. I have more confidence using text editors than web page editors. HTML Kit is also worth considering.

Hello...Guys.
Hi Mani, I've found that costing web sites really does depend on the length of the string, and pricing per inch is sometimes not the best way.
