Just got a headache looking at that....

Hi My name is Seán. I've always been interested in web design, design, apps etc. but I don't consider myself to be any good at it I've chanced my arm doing some websites and bits and pieces for myself and I learn quick enough and think I've a good overall idea of how things work (extremely generally) I posted an Ad here a while back looking for a Wordpress Website. Got some great responses but as it turned out went with a local designer who I had been in contact with. Anyway I'm quite interested in Wordpress and web design in general. I'm a professional Musician who has a lot of down time when not touring and even when I am most of my time is spent with laptop in hand. I've been studying Business with Open Uni for the past 2 years and I have to now choose my second subject as part of a joint honours. I'm at a stage where I can choose my degree and I've decided to use Business as my second subject and Computing & IT as my First. Here's a link to the course synopsis BSc (Honours) Computing & IT and a second subject I'd like to end up with a good general knowledge of everything from PS design to coding etc. I am especially interested in iPhone App Development also but I'm wondering should one concentrate on 1 aspect rather than trying to be an all rounder? Should I concentrate on learning to code and leave the PS Design to someone who's been at that side of things for years? I'm not looking to make money here or anywhere...it'd be nice to make a supplementary income some day but I'm not a dreamer either! So where should one start? Are there any worthwhile online classes/tutorials (That are interesting and interactive rather than just a bunch of boring 100 page wikipedia like tutorials) What are the signs of a good solid groundwork in a designer? Bearing in mind i'm interested in Wordpress maybe Joomla stuff as opposed to carts etc..Maybe creating themes and that.. Where to start...What to do what not to do...What are the mistakes many make? Any comments on the course too would be very appreciated...I'm looking at concentrating on either Software or Solutions Dev there... Looking forward to some replies! Cheers Seán

Hi I've been using MAMP to create a wordpress website offline. I went live with it this morning to test it out everything uploaded right database seems okay i can log into my admin area and edit things. Now when i go to the website URL the index page appears perfectly. however none of the rest of the site works. I just get "page cannot be found". In the admin area the page urls match up with what the links are trying to bring me to and all the pages are published etc and were running fine locally the site is Totalirishdancing.com All help appreciated!

I think i'm just going to use the magento store as my entire website. No need for the amateurish looking site around such a powerful shop. You mentioned before that you used to sell magento themes? If you still do send me a link to where i can find them as i'd be interested in getting one. Thanks again Sean

OK so i had a previous problem posted here regarding the installation of magento. My host did not meet the requirements for magento but now it definitely does. All the PHP and Mysql requirements have been met. However i'm still having problems installing the cart but i know its something i'm doing wrong and I think its something small. The host is definitely running MySQL 4.1.20 (or greater). I think i'm uploading the magento folder to the wrong place or not doing something. When I go to instal (www.website.com/install/) i don't get anything. just "page cannot be found". Also when i was installing vbulletin message board before i had to specify pre installation where the mysql database was located on the server? My host uses Hsphere control panel. When I upload the magento folder i'm simply uploading it with filezilla into my website folder on the server is this right? According to user manual there is nothing i need to do or change before upload. All file permissions are set right also so its not that. Heres what magento check is showing me: Warning: shell_exec() [function.shell-exec]: Unable to execute 'mysql -V' in D:\hshome\smcarthy\totalirishdancing.com\store\magento-check.php on line 28 Your server does not meet the following requirements in order to install Magento. The following requirements failed, please contact your hosting provider in order to receive assistance with meeting the system requirements for Magento: You need MySQL 4.1.20 (or greater) Any help is very much appreciated as i'm getting quite frustrated and forlorn with the whole thing!

Just looking there myself at the phpinfo would i be right in saying they are running 5.0.51a? Which would mean the problem is at my end?

Okay so they've moved me onto their new server.....Still not working. Just wondering if it could be me doing anything wrong with the SQL database or is it still the server. Heres what the checker is now showing Magento Checker and here is the phpinfo

Personally i'd have a different font in the footer? Not sure why but I think it'd just look more professional with a different font....I really like the site though. very user friendly.

From a lay persons perspective! I like the background image on the right hand side but i feel the left hand side blends too much into the background. There isn't enough of a contrast between the white and the grey on the left. Also your blog page is kind of annoying? It feels like you've just dropped pre made blog page into the website. plus there is no links to get back to your website. the home button just reloads the blog page. Definitely agree with the above posters about more images and to show some of your previous work or sample sites on your homepage. If I was looking for a designer its what i'd be looking at first not the text. Don't wait for people to find your portfolio show them straight away. I'm no designer and a beginner but if I was you i'd have a look at some of the other experienced designers on this forum and have a look at their sites. I like your nice clean style though just needs a bit more substance. On your portfolio page I expected the images to enlarge with light box when i hovered over them. I think it would be a good addition. Most people hate clicking the link to a new site. Show them without having to open a new window. Plus the link takes people off your website? have it open in a new tab/window Don't mean to be going on now but something i've really noticed is the lack of prices. Its a bit vague? I'd be definitely looking to see general starting prices and more information on what you'd actually be buying rather than explaining SEO etc. to people, most of whom wouldn't understand it anyway....All meant in a constructive manner!
