Hello to all!

I am, in the near future, going to be taking on a project of creating a website mostly targeted towards beginners in the web design field. There are going to be many different aspects of the site... tutorials, networking, etc.

What I want to know is what you would like/ would have liked when beginning in the web design field! What kind of resources? Any opinions of what I should add to the site would be greatly appreciated :D

Regards,

Brendan

P.S. If you don't want to make your opinion public for whatever reason, feel free to pm me ^_^

Looking back to last century when I started, I found http://www.htmlgoodies.com and learnt all the basics from that site. The rest of it was really surfing around looking for solutions to problems.

Most tutorial sites just list things by topic, but what I would have found useful is a list of questions with links to answers, ie, "How do I optimise images" - one of the things I liked about HTMLGoodies was that fact that many tutorials had great titles like "So You Want Fancy Drop Boxes, Huh?" which made stuff easy to find.

Ok from beginning, My dream was and still is to be C|net OR Google OR Mozilla. (I love to be cnet) << No JOke

And everything I Love anything i have to do for going to that stage. Right now iam working whole day and whole night and sometimes i am like only 4 hours slept in full one day.

Actually iam hardware engineer and i was going good. and then i turn to this profession, Hope i'll find my results best.

Best of luck to meeeeee!!!

No offence meant by this but maybe you should look at some tutorial sites and learn to code correctly as your site xual.page has 1875 Errors, 36 warnings when checking it against web standards (click Here to see) . It is one thing to want to do things yourself, but another to have enough pride in what you do to admit sometimes you need help in doing things right.

Back to the question at hand

I agree with bluedreamer, actually it is how I am busy doing a site that I am creating, based off questions that I have answered on here. I would say have something like an FAQ section and maybe a useful tips section, for those little things that are easy to explain that people can forget.

Don't use foo! I hate foo. foo may hate me, but then it would be mutual. And if it doesn't; meh. It's only foo innit?

Anyhoo, when you normally get examples / tutorials, the norm is to use foo examples. Maybe cos they're the same on all sites? But what would be good is to use real life situations. Real variable names as someone would actually use when coding their website.

Maybe I'm the only one on the whole internet who thinks that. Cos I'm yet to find anywhere that does...

Can we please talk about this somewhere else and get back on topic?

What do you mean by this?

What do you mean by this?

I think he means that pretty much any tutorial written these days just uses generic terms and do not always answer the question at hand because they are too generic - which i completely agree with.

For example, a tutorial about a php contact list...

Instead of using $foo1, $foo2, $foo3 throughout the tutorial use $name, $number, $address

i hope that makes sense...

It's like the old "hello world" at the start of possibly every tutorial ever written... don't do that, i'm very much a beginner, but there's only so many times i can skip the Hello World!

Also, one thing that gets me about tutorial/resource sites is that most of them try and cram as much info in as possible... i would prefer a site that a beginner like myself can actually find what they are looking for easily

Brendan - I find little out there about the basics of javascript, although lots of html, css and php. Maybe an idea there?

Also, when I started out, I found so much about html and css, some with diff methods etc that it was hard to know which way to turn. Maybe a clarification of the fact that there is more than one way to do it ....somehow bringing it together.

Agree about the hello world tuts - whenever I see that i am already bored and move on lmao.

I think the key is to come up with an unique stance on topics that have had a lot of coverage.

Good luck fella :)

Please stay on topic. Your posts make no sense.

Brendan, maybe have lessons and then quiz's for those lessons, along with ranking (How many you got right 75%, 90% 100% etc.)

  • 2 weeks later...

Having a collection of links that answer questions is the best thing IMO..not to mention it's really easy to link to other good articles/pages.
