This is the first forum i've ever set up, I don't want to cover it in adverts just yet , I want to build a friendly community and wondered if anyone with forum experience can suggest where I go scouting and how i go about telling people about this new forum.

I am in the process of adding categories on it , suggestions please :)

Take a look it is running on MyBB script and seems to be doing the job.

Thanks Guys

One thing not to do, is scout for members on similar/rival forums, without getting permission from the forum owner.

I've seen it a number of times on other forums - it causes a lot of animosity and people will deliberately avoid your forum

It's a podcast forum , this forum doesn't cover podcasts as far as i'm aware. I believed this was a web design forum.

Thanks for your concern however :)

I don't think Nero was warning you about posting here, rather telling you don't post in other forums if they are too similar.

You need to get yourself ranked reasonably high for relevant searches, post up some initial quality content so that people find answers they are looking for on your forum, and therefore want to join.

Ahhh sorry nero if i got the wrong end of the stick. and thanks to you for your great suggestions. Keep em coming :) ALSO!!!

Why not sign up ? I'm pretty sure you guys listen to atleast one podcast you or indeed do a podcast?

Thanks

Don't over advertise in one place either, again this isn't a warning about here but people on some sites will be less likely to go to your forum if you seem so desperate. A good way of forum advertising is adding a link to your signature, and then posting helpful and meaningful posts in that forum. This way you are contributing to that forum and still showing that you have one to. But make sure that the forums you go to allow this (we don't mind, but I don't know if most of us would be your target) So target your advertising :)

Give them a reason to join, intresting topics start discussions. It is one thing to have a forum, it is another to get members but it is entirely different thing to get people to stay and discuss things. So you need to make it intresting, a major put off will be a forum with a few sections and most of them have no posts, so even if you just get some friends to join up at first to get a discussion going in different sections it would help give the forum more appeal to those who just stumble on it.

good advice there, Well i am building on the posts now with useful podcast setup information etc. Also i am introducing a wordpress blog to the setup which will contain podcast news and also working on some interviews with different podcast creators to get some names on there. Already had some good responses and hopefully it will grow. Good thinking with the web address in the signature tag and posting on forums as usual. Peoples curiosity will get the better of them I click alot of signature tags on here so it must work. I will be adding one to my webdesignerforum account shortly

cheers for all the advice .

Happy that it helped :) I am always more drawn to signature links than links in advertising threads so its good to know I'm not the only one :pp The blog is a great idea as well

Good luck with the forum, I hope it goes well :)
