The company I work for have a web development company. They are telling them that there is a cost of £340 to migrate and develop an SSL certificate into the website (plus the cost of the certificate itself). The site is built using Umbraco.

I might be wrong, but I didn't think there was any coding needed in order to attach an SSL certificate. I thought that you just buy it, activate it and install it, which in my experience doesn't take too long. Are there sites that need special development work needed to integrate the certificate?

 

You're right: no coding required - you can just use a tool in your web hosting control panel to activate it.

SSLs range from free (which is all most people need) up to £249.99 for Extended Validation one - at least those are the prices where I work. 

Many hosts now offer a free SSL as part of their services.

With mine I just changed http to https in my cPanel. Didn’t need to do anything else.

It's possible they might charge for support time for doing it on your behalf, but most hosts will support Lets Encrypt certificates that are free. Don't bother with expensive EV certificates, there's no benefit - https://www.troyhunt.com/extended-validation-certificates-are-dead/.

Many hosts also give it for free.  Anything  deployed to Netlify for example has HTTPS by default with no extra configuration from the user.

For the certificate itself I cannot see the need of £340 to do anything. In their defence their fee might include updating all internal links to https, ensuring all pages correctly 301 to https etc. I've not used Umbraco so cannot comment on that bit.

It depends that what are your requirements and needs. Many of them give free ssl you just need to have a plugin to di the work.
