Do I still need to accomodate old versions of IE?

Featured Replies

Hello everyone, and happy new year!

It's been a few years since I did any web design work. I'm designing a website for my husband (just using an old site I did as a template and changing colours etc, as it needs to be done quickly) and am wondering whether anyone is still using old versions of Internet Explorer, or can I remove all my old fixes from the code?

Depends on how far back you want to go. Look at the visitor stats and see what versions are being used.

I’ve not needed to add any IE specific code for years.

I personally support IE10 and upwards, if you're using modern JavaScript or browser APIs you'll need those polyfilled.  https://caniuse.com/ is very useful when you want to look up browser compatibility for a spec, it lists polyfills for these too.

If you're using Babel to transpile modern JavaScript you can use the `preset-env` plugin to define a browser environment and configure it with a list of browsers that you support.  You can also do the same with Autoprefixer for any CSS prefixes that might be needed.  These tools are great because you don't have to worry about this stuff once it is configured.

you will need (IE / older browser specific code -- polyfills) if you use one of the modern web-APIs such as https://caniuse.com/#search=push-API which is really useful to create a real-time shopping experience where stock updates, offers etc can be pushed upto the client.  Facebook makes heavy use of this API with it's notifications system, so too does GMail.

Indeed, but I suspect this isn’t going to be the case with @rhubarblover. The fact they are reusing an old template suggests this is going to be a static site.

Yeah good point on that.  To be fair given it's just a quick site I wouldn't even go to the trouble of removing bits code for old browsers assuming they don't break anything in modern browsers - there just isn't any point in this scenario.

I usually look at the site's stats to see what IE usage there is and make decisions/recommendations from there. I no longer "support" any versions of IE by default as usage is typically <5% for the type of sites I work with, but saying that it's always the clients choice whether to spend the extra money or let people using IE get a more basic version of the site that still works.

For your case if it's a business site look at the stats and see the % usage and make a decision based on that, is the extra work worth the few %?

Thanks for the answers. This is indeed just a simple, static site to provide some information and contact details. It's true that there isn't much benefit to removing the code; I just find it a little annoying and seem to enjoy removing redundant material... :)

Currently he doesn't have a website at all, so there's no visitor data to check, but we will of course be keeping an eye on that.

Suppose it will have to just stay for now.

Also, nice to see the same faces still around :) @rbrtsmith -

You sure that's still accurate? :p
