Would it be incredibly hard to think of an original plugin or script?

Featured Replies

With HTML and CSS it's not so hard because you generally follow a template of how the websites are made, and there is a correct way to do it, so there's not so much creativity involved except in the design.

But with scripts is a different scenario, chances are you'd just be better using an already created script, when I see many people creating their own scripts I can also see that this kind of thing has been created before, and it doesn't really make sense to create another script that's probably a less developed version of what had been thought of before.

I have trouble to think of an original idea of a script or plugin, and even if I had thought of something i bet there'd already been a script created before for this and hence it would be pointless to reinvent the wheel, do you think? Even a slider for example, you may want to create your own, but it'd make more sense just copying one.

Do you often get tasks at work to create plugins or script that are original? And do you also think it was right to create a new script rather than just use what's already there?

If you work on every-day projects, you'll find out while everything you can think of might have been done already, there always is something that requires you to build a custom plugin or write a custom script to suit your project.

In view of that, yes, I find it 100% better to write my own script (minus the cases where one doesn't need to reinvent the wheel, e.g. basic sliders, etc.).

With your own work you have a chance to learn and improve.

Yes. all the time. I'm working on one right now for a client in the Netherlands.

PS: I offered you some projects that needed further development but you never got in contact.

We've gone over this already, you don't have to create something groundbreakingly original. The problem with a lot of premade scripts is that they are trying to be a swiss army knife when all you need is a screwdriver. All that extra functionality is bloat, and the screwdriver provided by the swiss army knife is not engineered exactly for the kind of screw you are using. What you need is something bespoke to pair well with the unique screw you have, otherwise it's just shoehorned in and the result is amateurish at best.

That analogy translates very well to development.

It's not always the case and I do use libraries when I think they are a good fit for the task at hand, but that isn't your problem here. Your problem is inexperience at actually writing JavaScript.

Just focus on writing code and practice. Originality in conception won't make you a better programmer. Practicing to code will. Stop looking for some kind of magic to suddenly 'get it' it doesn't work like that, it takes continual progression and many, many hours of practice.
