Junior Graphic Designer

Featured Replies

Hello there. I'm new on this forum. I'm highly interested in graphic design. I have a little problem. I do not have any portforlio. I want to start as a Junior Graphic Designer in this year (in the UK). I have no idea how can I gain a portfolio. I have a strong knowledge about Adobe Photoshop.

Any advice will be very helpful. Many thanks for your answer.

Just create a portfolio of your own designs. Posters, logos, adverts, branding and so on. There are plenty of websites where you can publish your examples. You can also use freelancer sites to advertise your services.

But there are a lot of graphic designers already struggling to find work to you may not find a job for a long time.

Same with developers, you just have to work your socks off and rise above those vying for junior positions.

As for creating a portfolio just make one. It doesn't have to consist of real projects. Take existing websites and show how you would improve them etc.

Before starting any website, it would be better if you can do the graphics design works through different freelancing websites. There you have to create the profile and along with with that you can be able to share your sample works. Being there will help you in getting both potential clients and experiences, which may help you during starting a company .

If I wanted to build a portfolio I would find voluntary organisations who needed graphic design and for whatever reason haven't got it done and just do it for them. If you get their co-operation even better and if they choose to use your work then bingo you have real world experience. I mean some simple corporate Identity, logo and letterhead work for groups like:

  • parent-teacher org
  • dr patient group
  • church stuff
  • school meals service
  • swimming club
  • local campaign group
  • parish council
  • am dram soc

really anyone who has the need, and better still if you are interested in the cause.

Good luck!
