Only a few days left before the New Year! Looking back at 2014, how was it for you? Did you achieve all you wanted to?

A very niche ambition for 2015 Paul - regex! It'll eventually click. I know "enough", but I defined what "enough" means

 

Positive year on the whole for me. Career-focused year, so achievements have been career-related. I definitely want to sort out my online presence in 2015 (say it every year), and commit to some sort of blog. Also hoping to deliver an exciting system for a new startup with an old friend/client.

Started badly, got worse.

I've had a great year, I've learnt a hell of a lot compared to where I was last year I've traveled to a few countries and met some hugely inspiring developers.

 

In 2015 I aim to improve my blog with many more articles covering things that I am learning.

I want to focus my research into web performance and improving my codebases to make them more flexible to change and with better readability.

I'd like to find the time to properly learn Node.js and automated test driven development.

Improve my pretty shoddy Vim skills.

Attend more conferences than I did in 2014.

Further develop our web agencies in-house front-end framework and perhaps release it for open source.

 

Other goals for 2015

Compete again in powerlifting & strongman. My last comp was in May but I got injured in June and haven't competed since.

Make the absolute most of my upcoming trips to New York, Las Vegas and Rome.

Cook more interesting meals.

Spend more time learning Swedish.

 

@@citypaul I feel your pain for regex, I used a load of them less than 2 months ago in a pen I created to read css and generate a specificity graph. I have subsequently forgotten almost everything about them. If you find a great tutorial I'd be happy if you shared it And if you did create some screencasts on TDD I'd be one of the first to watch through them - as I've not been convinced by what I've seen thus far.

Started badly....

started well, went to crap when my job ended to our pissy economy. did go to legoland in Denmark though, that was good.

did get a bit of work proofreading recently (from Swedish/Finnish translated to English) but the situation is quite poor in Finland (isn't it everywhere )

 

still, tomorrow is whisky tasting club so things looking up already (even though my bottle is only a 20cl benromach 10 year old )

 

edit: i'm planning on doing some projects to keep me from getting rusty and improve my skills:

• a decent contact form (honestly hard to find a decent tutorial for an up to date front and back end bits)
• a video of my kids - edited with titles and stuff in premiere
• a logo for our whisky club
• making my friend's artists website resposnsive - just can't choose whether to use a framework or hand code it...
• set up a virtual machine to test in different Explorers- got half way and failed
• make my light box and videos on my own site (more) responsive
• get better at starcraft II even though i never have the time or the nerve to play competitivley online maybe even learn to play as zerg. I'm probably lower bronze leauge at best at the moment (for toss and terran)
• learn blender better - just started looking at it really - thought i might try something relatively easy like a lego man

i did have the idea of forcing to do a few things - mini procjects as it were - every week but so far i've only got as far as netflix and starcraft just a few things like implementing svg, getting better at sass. basically getting off my arse -- or rather *on* and getting learning and improving. oh and then keeping a blog of my daily s**t adn then i can use it on my cv too. well that's the plan

Went quite well. I learned a hell of a lot of stuff in a short amount of time and have become stronger and better at the job I do as a result.

 

I headed to a few Magento events and enjoyed the Mage Titans event meeting Vinai Kopp and Ben Marks (although I don't focus on Mage much so some of this went way over my head).

 

Looking forward to 2015 and learning more, gaining more experience and learning to say no to freelance work :-)

Although it's very silly to post now because obviously it's far into the year but still 2014 was wonderful for me in every thing.
