Hi I am new and I am just dipping my toe into the water of the whole website design/creation/maintenence/webspace industry. I am trying to see if there is much money that can be made in it as I have heard mixed opinions. I can tell from this forum that the public interest is lively which is good but some friends have told me there is simply too many people doing this kind of work and its overcrowded. The opportunities are not there anymore like in the late 90's early 2000's when the internet was still getting on its feet commercially and lots of website developers/creators and maintenence IT people were in demand.

 

What is the truth here please? where does the industry stand? what is my best bet if I want to try and learn something website related be it design or creation or whatever. I am trying to see where the market is at these days and what to do if anything is worth doing. I really don't want to spend years learning programming and website design coding etc only for it to basically be useless in the grand scale of things due to too many people already doing it etc and I am approaching 35 so I am not a spring chicken anymore with bags of time!

I just started as well. I don`t think or at least i don`t hope there no oppertunity anymore, it probably has just become harder considering there`s already so much on the internet.

So the key is to have something that people want and to bring it on a interesting way and of course to be known.

Internet is becoming more and more popular and its role in our lives keeps on growing as well, therefore if anything the chances are good, but like i said you need to have attention.

 

So many people are using the net and it has become so advance you don`t have to be a expert anymore to start a website. but i would advice to learn something. I dont know how good you are with computers, but being handy with a computer is a great advantage. i would suggest learning something about HTML, perhaps only basic, but than you`ll at least understand whats it about. Earlier you needed a great deal of knowledge on HTML, but now you have programs who code it for you.

 

perhaps visit some tutorial websites and watch youtube or something?

First of all, design / web design is a hard work, as hard as any other industry. If you are asking if you could miraculously make big money overnight, that won't happen. There are money to be made, again, as much as with any other other industry, you need to put a lot of time and effort and develop yourself / your skills constantly.

 

There might be or might not be too many people doing it, however there'll always be work for the designers who put themselves out. If you compare web design with any other industry - skilled professionals are always in demand.

So, I would say it is worth pursuing this, only if you are into it, love what you do and are prepared to work hard - otherwise you'll be disappointed.

That's not exactly right. It's true, you don't need to be an expert to start a website, but then you don't have to be an expert to cook a basic meal, right? Most people can cook a basic meal, but there will always be a job for the professional chefs.

 

Learning HTML and CSS is a must! Relying on WYSIWYG editors won't take you anywhere. Being a web designer / developer means you are constantly learning new skills. Languages and technologies change all the time and you have to keep up.

 

My advise would be think about why you want to jump into web design, as it's not something you can learn overnight and get rich overnight. To be successful you need to be into the job 100%, eat, sleep and breathe web design and prepared to put long hours of hard work into it.

^ I echo what teodora said really, it's a career path which requires dedication and time to learn the basics.

 

Now the internet is here it's not going away any time soon so skills will always be in demand for the forseeable future. Things will adapt and evolve so getting stuck in now will see you in a better position in 10 years time. If you feel this is an area you want a career in then get stuck in!

Thanks for your adsvice thusfar its useful! do you think starting late at 35 will really be a disadvantage? I worry I am too old and don't have the credentials to really make it. Is this true? also is there a specific AREA in web design that might be more in demand than another?

 

Do you think learning Python would be useful also? people tell me its useful to know a programming language or some programming languages also.

You're definitely not too old!

 

Programming and server side roles probably attract higher rates because they are more specialised, but take long to learn. If you look at the typical 3 main areas then earning potential may look something like this:
