Could someone please explain why one business has a brown marker, whilst the other has a red marker? If I zoom out any further the brown marker disappears and Google maps then only shows the businesses with the red marker, making that business far more prominent.

Notice the purple link in the image below is second on Google's ranking, yet it's hardly ranked for the map at all other than the brown place marker. I'm trying to get it to appear on the map to the right of the search like the other nurseries have done. Any advice at all is deeply appreciated! smile.gif

Okay so have you verified the loction? Have you provided a verification between the website and the Google Plus page? Does your website have the same address as the Google Maps listing? I'm not a G Maps wizz so I'm not 100% sure why it's like that.

But if you can provide a website and link to your Google Plus page I'll have a look!

I believe I've verified everything, but perhaps I missed something?

If you look closer you will notice that there are several different colours in use on icons, brown icons are used for businesses within that area have depicted themselves as 'School or Higher Education'. The colour is used for a wide range of business types.

Check out the Google Places for business help pages for more info on how to change your icon and/or it's colour. Unfortunately they are badly laid out and organized and it will take time to find the full answer! Definitely a G-1 for that 'help' site from Google.
