You can use google disavow tool..it is the good option.

You can check through webmaster tool,majesticseo and backlinkwatch tool.You cam remove these links through disvaw tool.

What constitutes a 'bad back link'? Are we talking about links from websites that we don't morally agree with or is there more to it than that?

 

Low quality content, keyword heavy links, low authority domain, blog/website network, gateway pages, source is irrelevant to your site ... the list goes on.

Google disavow tool is helpful in this case.

As a seo expert having 6 years experience i think bad link are no matter in serp rank. if you have only bad back links but with anchor text definitely you got rank in Google serp. i have a website i done practical on that. and made only bad back links like 0 null and 1 pr website back links. after 2 month i show results my website in top 10 in serp result!! really wonderful for me, yes my website have page rank only 1. but its got rank so no page rank matter. because i am getting a lot of traffic with that.
