What is the mean of canonical tag?

Featured Replies

Canonical issues: (duplicate content) canon = legitimate or
official version – It is often nearly impossible to avoid duplicate content,
especially with CMSs like Wordpress, but also due to the fact that
http://www.site.com/, site.com, and www.site.com/index.htm are supposedly seen
as dupes by the SEs – although it’s a bit hard to believe they aren’t more
sophisticated than that. However these issues can be dealt with effectively in
several ways including – using the noindex meta tag in the non-canonical
copies, and 301 server redirects to the canon.

canonical tag is used when you have two or more pages with the same content then you have to tell bots that those pages are duplicate of one page. Simply put the main url of the page is all duplicate pages in canonical tag.

Canonical tags tell the search engine bots which pieces of content are
the original or primary ones and which are duplicates. This way the bot
will pass over the duplicates and only index and give link credit to the
primary piece.

Hello Friends,

As the revised forum guidelines have only recently gone up, perhaps not everyone has viewed them or even skimmed over them (84 views at time of writing this). Here is a little pointer for your reference:

Vague Queries

We all know the role of the forum and it's purpose, but please be a little more specific with certain questions. Asking "What is Google?" is open for debate and can lead to multiple responses - some of the time, copied and pasted definitions. A link is absolutely fine if you feel it will benefit people.

While the canonical tag is an important one, it's interesting to note people active in the SEO section asking these questions. It's a bit like a designer asking what the pen tool is in Photoshop.

There's nothing wrong with not knowing 'everything' but seeing as the replies are copied and pasted definitions, it might be worth going through a search engine or forum first rather than have a thread full of the same replies.

Suppose you are building an E commerce website and you have a product of different colors and for each color you are opening different webpage (i know no one do such but still some of people do and it is just example) then to avoid duplication and repetitive content.and to maintain keyword density.

Normally search engines considers a URL in different forms including http://, excluding that, including www, excluding that and so on and the link juice is passed onto them separately whereas everything is same. So to get rid of that its better to redirect search engine crawler to follow one URL and that sort of activity is known as canonicalization.

If the search engines sees a page as being published at many separate
URLs, the search engine may rank your pages lower than they would
otherwise, or not rank them at all.

The Canonical tag attribute is very much like a 301 redirect through the canonical URL tag.

A canonical page may be the preferred sort of some pages with highly similar content that needs to be considered by search engines like Google.

Canonical tag is used when you have two pages and both pages have same content and you want to use content in both side due to not to face dublicate content problem so you can use canonical tag. Canonical tag implement in your first page and do not put in second page otherwise your both page would not be indexed.

I am noticing canonical issue in many website these days , develoeprs not underlining it properly , If you want to remove duplicacy of content (due to different url's ) we need to add a code in meta tag of identical pages that is called canonical tagging.

Canonical tags is used to tell the search engine bots that which piece of content are the original one and which one is duplicate. By doing this the bot will pass over the duplicate and only give link and index to the original piece.

Canonical tag is used to show the crawlers which webpage is the mainpage from which the content has been used for different webpages. It is mainly used for removing the duplication of the content.
