April 2, 201313 yr I want to get the code checked over, see what you think about the quality of it. page - http://m03.divulgetechnologies.com/beatplexity/?page_id=237&f=295 i would really appreciate anyones expertise here, i want to carry on working with these developers but just want to make sure everything is above board.
April 2, 201313 yr Does it display properly on all modern browsers? If so, then the code is good enough On iPad at the moment so can't view the source properly, will give it a look over in the morning mate!

If so, then the code is good enough On iPad at the moment so can't view the source properly, will give it a look over in the morning mate! i will check cross browser, thanks for the tip, forgot about that, i was hoping that the pages would be laid out a bit easier in wordpress so i could edit them myself but they have create php pages so i can't just go into the pages within wordpress and edit them, maybe i was just not knowledgeable enough on what is possible. The way its coded just seems very messy to me i would appreciate a more skilled pair of eyes

April 2, 201313 yr Wordpress doesnt just create 'php pages' its much much more then this.. PhP is a server side langauge, all code is executed on the server and output as html to the users browsers. What that php is doing is the background is much more then just 'easy to edit page'
April 3, 201313 yr Author If they've just created PHP pages, what is Wordpress actually doing? :S Doesn't look very good on iPad at the moment https://www.dropbox.com/s/dpw0a0qi4hlbqup/Photo%2002-04-2013%2021%2044%2005.png ye see this was what i was thinking, i wanted the site developed in wordpress so i could easily edit pages. I was hoping the template pages would be created in the 'pages' section of wordpress and then i could edit stuff, add shortcodes, graphics within the wordpress editor to make the site look nice. Is this too much to ask?? Also the theme we are using is responsive but they have not coded around that it seems as viewing on mobile devices the site looks horrible Wordpress doesnt just create 'php pages' its much much more then this.. PhP is a server side langauge, all code is executed on the server and output as html to the users browsers. What that php is doing is the background is much more then just 'easy to edit page' i see, so was it too much to ask to have my pages within wordpress and easy to edit?
April 3, 201313 yr I'm not too sure what to say about the site. Parts of the code and nice some bits are horrible. I would of personally built a template (or different templates), then you would be able to edit the content through WP Admin (otherwise what the hell is the point of wordpress being there?). Where they've edited the theme it's mucked up the responsiveness to it (If that's even a word?!). Also the design overall is all over the place. Obviously, I dunno what stage they are at the moment? Have they said it's finished?

Have they said it's finished? Thanks for taking a look Jack i really appreciate it. yes see that is what i wanted, pages (or templates) created in wordpress so i could go in and edit them, ive been using wp for years now and im very adept to the editor and using shortcodes and graphics to create some pretty nice pages. But how they have designed it is basically useless to me. Also i have been waiting for this theme to go responsive, they knew very well i wanted to keep the responsiveness of the theme in tact as I have been waiting for months to get the beta of their responsive theme, they appear to have ruined the way it works They have said they have finished and won't do anymore work. I can understand their argument, obviously no one can work for free. Ive already been burned too many times before with shoddy coding, hence why im a bit apprehensive to hand over the cash ($800) Im not sure if I have a case to just completely decline the job, i wanted something designed in wordpress and have been asking them whether i could edit the pages in wordpress for some time, they said they would work something out. I really don't know what to do, the website is far from complete, it looks horrid at the moment, but that didn't bother me as i thought i could do the design work myself (changing fonts, headings, adding tooltips, graphics, images etc to make it looks nice all with the use of some shortcodes) but that seems impossible now as the pages are all just .php Any suggestions on what to do?

Have you paid them anything at all so far? I'm guessing you had a contract in place? If not then ouch... What did they specifically say they were going to do?
April 3, 201313 yr Author Have you paid them anything at all so far? I'm guessing you had a contract in place? If not then ouch... What did they specifically say they were going to do? nope haven't paid anything yet, its through freelancer so its in escrow i have pm'd you the original job spec
April 3, 201313 yr What have you paid them to do exactly? If their making you a custom theme then what you currently have is not complete - the responsive element is a mess. Have you tweaked that code at all? I'm a little confused because you stated that you're a "wp adept" but it doesn't seem as though you have a very good understanding of what PHP is or how it interacts with WP..?In a nutshell, it's a server-side scripting language that performs various queries on the server and outputs HTML to the browser. PHP is editable and without it you wouldn't be able to dynamically update your website. Nevertheless, if you're having a WP template created for you then the content should be easy to manage and update (as you know being an experienced WP user); however, if what you want to do is make changes to the theme/design then that's not going to be easy and some PHP knowledge would most likely be required.

Wait so they made it where u cant even edit the pages u want in wordpress? sounds to me like they just created standalone pages by basically not knowing how the hell to build a proper wordpress template. anyways if this is the case id have them fix that with no added charge or just dont pay them

By the looks of things mate, this person has taken on the project and not knowing a thing about WordPress... It looks like there is no real contract in place, which is a bummer for him as it means you can walk away and he can't do much at all! Best thing to do would be to find someone else At the end of the day, looking at the job spec you've sent they have not fulfilled their role (although there is no mention of responsive design in the job spec?).

More then likely the guy the OP is paying thinks the OP does not know much and does not know he is even part of a web designer/developers forum. Either way id suggest the OP finds someone else to take care of it. $800 dollars is wayyyy to much to pay for a crappy job. Ps. @OP Don't ask me to do the Job i haven't a clue about Wordpress template design but atleast im honest about it ey on a brighter note there is a rather wordpress professional on this forum or use to be his username started with an R i believe id try to make an offer to him and he should be able to set the wrongs right Edited April 4, 201313 yr by webdesigner93
April 4, 201313 yr I'm a big fan of making sure my code validates. That's the best way I've found to ensure it runs as intended across the most platforms possible. Also like to make sure there are no errors in the console when the page loads.
April 4, 201313 yr Author Thanks to everyone whos had a look so far ill be sure to +rep you all, as it looks like you are going to save me from being burned again To answer your questions - What have you paid them to do exactly? If their making you a custom theme then what you currently have is not complete - the responsive element is a mess. Have you tweaked that code at all? I'm a little confused because you stated that you're a "wp adept" but it doesn't seem as though you have a very good understanding of what PHP is or how it interacts with WP..? I have paid them to create a music hosting website, a lot like soundcloud (albeit a very basic one) I wanted it developed in wordpress and asked for an expert wordpress developer. They are not making a custom theme, just editing the StrikingR theme from themeforest. I hvae not tweaked anything, its all on their server for the time being. I dont know anything about php but i can navigate my way around a html page, edit things and starting to learn more about css and can edit attributes and stuff with the help of firebug. So i can do basic edits like that and was hoping this website would be designed like a wordpress theme is as i have worked with themes before and have my own websites where i do some tweaks etc. The fact its all blended in with php just makes it a nightmare. Wait so they made it where u cant even edit the pages u want in wordpress? sounds to me like they just created standalone pages by basically not knowing how the hell to build a proper wordpress template. anyways if this is the case id have them fix that with no added charge or just dont pay them yep, the pages cant be accessed within the wordpress admin dashboard, they are all just standalone php pages created. They were not building a theme from scratch for me, they were just editing a premium theme (striking) that i already purchased, i thought this would save some time and money if they could just edit a theme but looks like not. I think im just going to not pay them, they are persistant to get the money quickly probably so they can just dump this piece of c**p on my server and then end the contract. Not quite sure how to break the news to them. Couldn't agree more. Yes they clearly are not a wordpress developer, seems so hard to find designers with some integrity these days. I want to sit down with a developer, works out wireframes, flow, elements before we even get started with the coding. But it seems a developer/designer like this is well out of my budget. Well i have a contract with freelancer.com - i guess ill have to get in contact with teh support and see if i have a case, it really does suck for him, as hes been working on it for some time, but honestly this end product is just not up to standard and im not going to throw $800 down the drain for nothing. Yes you are right there is no mention of a responsive design, but we put the project on hold for about a month while we waited for the theme to go responsive, i think its pretty obvious i wanted the responsiveness in tact. More then likely the guy the OP is paying thinks the OP does not know much and does not know he is even part of a web designer/developers forum. Either way id suggest the OP finds someone else to take care of it. $800 dollars is wayyyy to much to pay for a crappy job. I best get back to the drawing board, ill admit my budget is small, which makes it very hard to find someone to work to the level of detail i want. I would love to find someone who wanted to create a well made website that they actually wanted to show off in the portfolio.
April 4, 201313 yr Author update - ok ive sent the developer and run down of everything you guys have talked about and he's just agreed to cancel the project and issue a refund, he didnt even argue i think he knew my points were valid. So good news i have the money back to approach this with a new developer......bad news......just wasted 2 months and put the new site release date back a bit. Anyone got any suggestions on where to hire wordpress developers, im fed up with sites like freelancer and odesk, the quality that i want just isnt there. I know you get what you pay for, but it would be nice to find someone with some integrity. I like freelancer because obviously the funds are in escrow and ive had some problems in the past of giving someone money (only a small amount) to do a job and then disappearing so i like the security of using a site like freelancer.
