Ive been wanting to learn php for ages now and now ive gotthe grasped with html and css I was wondering.

 

What is the best way to learn php and if anyone can lead me in the right direction for some good tutorials.

i learn php with testing , find the php codes (a complete project) and start analyzing it then use them in you project and you will face with problems so try to solve them and that's it you will learn php, it was my way,i am good at 7 programming language just with this way.

There are some really good tutorials others have recommended here. I'm not a developer as such so all I can recommend is the basics. Here is one that I can vouch for until someone more knowledgeable can point you in the right direction

I remember also using PHP academy for starters, so I would offer you doing the same

I have found the best way to learn any coding language (or general things) is set yourself a project, in this instance something simple like a login script / image gallery with uploader and plan it. Then start building by using the great power of Google to find out how to do things.

 

If for instance you wanted to do an basic image gallery you might want to research how to do the following (Google these terms):

• Uploading images with PHP
• List a directory of images with PHP
• Remove images with PHP

As a beginner to get you started there are some tutorials on Lynda.com - I did Beyond the Basics by Kevin Skoglund which was excellent though be aware that it is fairly old and doesn't always use up to date techniques. As a beginner you might want to try the Essential tutorial by the same author. I would also recommend PHP and MySQL for Dynamic Websites by Larry Ullman. It gives you a thorough grounding in the basics, teaches useful programming and debugging techniques, covers security issues and includes some real world projects to gain the confidence to build your own projects.

Be wary of picking up scripts you find around the internet, there are tonnes of badly written ones kicking around. It's much better to learn from a professional resource and take it from there.

The O'Reilly books are generally really good reads and would recommend them over many others! But I always find books are only good for reference and not actually getting into learning a coding language. Still does work for people and can help find those handy functions you didn't know existed.

I remember being exactly where you are now... and I did alot of what is being suggested by others here. But what I found was the best way for me was to use video tutorials (im more of a visual person). I found tons of videos on youtube, but by far the best (and helped me build my first CSM) was tutorials on developphp dot com (sorry cant post links, im too new here)

Might be worth looking at.
