Hi, very new to all this...was wondering if someone can recommend any good home study courses. Had a look online and there just seems to be too many to choose from.

 

I pretty much have no knowledge of web design, the only html coding i know is from using eBay and MySpace (back in the day before Facebook). Money isn't really an issue as my employer will be paying for this.

I found that Lynda.com's training video's were 10 times better for learning the basics of HTML & CSS than any books I read on the subject. A subscription costs around £25/month (it's priced in dollars) for the full package which gives you access to the exercise files. I believe you can go onto their site and watch segments of their video's to get an idea of how their material works. Although I originally subscribed to learn the basics, I can see myself keeping on the subscription indefinitely because they have video's on how to learn just about anything IT related on there, and it's par for the course that you need to keep learning all the time.

 

Of particular worth to me were XHTML & HTML Essential Training, CSS Core Concepts, Illustrator and Photoshop tutorials, PHP with MySQL Essential Training, Javascript Essential Training, Typography for Web Designers (although you wouldn't necessarily know I'd watched it) and about a million others besides.

If your employer is paying and it's practical, do a college course of some description. It's far easier to learn when you're physically sat down with the tutor.

 

I find myself using http://www.tizag.com a lot, even years after starting this whole computer malarky. It's possibly a little closer to an examples/reference site than full-blown tutorials, but I find it useful.

I have been using Lynda.com for a while now and have found their training to be really useful and easy to follow especially with regards to Photoshop and HTML / CSS. Have just done the Wordpress Theme video and found that to be an absolute goldmine of information.

 

I think watching the videos and putting the lessons into practice has taught me much more than reading books

Have you considered the CIW Qualifications?

 

I have studied Foundations (Beginner) and Web Design Professional Courses.

 

I used DLC: http://www.distance-learning-centre.co.uk/

 

They are the official CIW Courses and the support was pretty good.

I learnt with mlwebco - at first from his free youtube videos and then more recently I invested in his training course which cost about £55 for lifetime membership ($89). I would highly recommend his course

 

I also read Design for Hackers which I refer to all the time
