ok, looking to buy a new laptop suited for web design, graphics and maybe a little hacking

:unknw:

If possible, I would get an alien. Never seen/had one before, I reckon he/she would be a lot more fun than an apple professional.

I second this. Simon Pegg had enormous fun with his.

If possible, get a PC :) But, if you really want a laptop, I say, Macbook Pro 13 inch. (if you want to go 15, its okay. But if 17, better buy a PC)

My problem with 15" is that, it's expensive, quite heavy so it's less portable and not that convenient, it's not that powerful, not that bad. It's right in the middle. The money is not worth it for something in the middle. So, better go portable or buy a PC. Macbook is not good for hacking btw.

Alien is for gaming :D and PC is better for gaming.

:D

@andyl: that's one but it's just that Mac OS environment is not suitable for those stuff, even for coding Mac doesn't feel as good. Doesn't feel as free as windows, there are limitations here and there. Tried to find a way to do it, but yea still. That's how I feel though so far, maybe different for others..

I think you over-looked my sarcasm. I believe most 'hacking' is done via a UNIX system, usually a Linux distribution. I would be very surprised if you saw a 'hacker' logging in to Windows 7, or Mac OS X.

Alien and Mac are both good.

Aliens are quit heavy weight.

Mac are heavy expensive(or keeping throwing cash to have your fav App.) Lol.

I wouldn't buy an Alienware if my life depended on it.

The look of them, fine if you're still going through puberty but once you're a grown adult, for goodness sakes. They're vile. No class, no style. They're as bad as those horrible custom PC's people would build stuffed full of flashing neon lights.

MacBooks aren't the only good laptops out there, and you pay a premium to own one, but they are very very good.

If you want similar specs on a tighter budget and you're not so bothered about it being a MacBook, there are plenty of other alternatives out there.

The Dell XPS14 looks awesome. It doesn't have the high-res screen the MacBook has, but then it is around £700 or so cheaper.

I say give it 3-5 months and other manufacturers will have releases identical-res laptops to the MacBook.

If Dell gave the XPS14 a similar res screen to the MacBook but still £700 cheaper - I'd go out and buy it tomorrow.

I really like this Nexus 7 they've put out. Has a PPI of 216 which is not far off the iPad which has a PPI of 260. I doubt you'd be able to tell.

Plus, it's a 7" tablet, which to me is perfect. I like the iPad, but it's too big for me and iOs is too restrictive. So the Nexus looks great.

Plus it's going to sell for what, £150? That's insanely cheap for such a well spec'd tablet.

You're correct that iOS is to crippled for any real work. I use my iPad for content consumption, would never dream of it for content creation. That's why i'm excited by the prospect of the pro surface.

I am happily bedded in with a G-series gaming unit. 17" screen and plenty of muscle for all design software. Is a gamer's laptop so looks are a bit slick and dark! But it is very quiet. No idea on the hacking but am guessing will be up to the job.

Out of interest, what are you hoping to do on a ~10" touch screen?

...with a full copy of Windows 8 and a keyboard? Anything i damn well please when i'm not in the office. Client meetings and proposals will be a lot easier for a start.

I really hate typing on a tablet. It's okay typing in web addresses, but typing emails or writing blog posts or commenting? I just find myself reaching for the laptop or phone instead.

I was just wondering - I get frustrated doing 'proper work' on a 19" desktop at work. I'd also be cautious of the keyboard being the equivalent to those micro-mouses people regret buying for their laptops.

Desktop + laptop for work, tablet for Real Racing 2 HD :yahoo:

Would be undoubtedly useful, though, having a mini computer at all times.

Totally agree and if i was anywhere near the office workstation i'd be straight on it but i do find myself quite often at meetings where it would come in bloody handy.

Of course i hear what you're saying about the keyboard but i'll hold judgement till i actually get to try one for size!

I use a 2007 macbook for all my work.

It runs faster / just as fast and can multi task just as much as any other laptop i have ever used.

It cost me £50 because it wasnt booting, which apple fixed for free (their customer car is amazing)
