I have just recently started back up as a freelance web designer after 7 years of inactivity due to marriage, children, life etc my skills are terribly outdated and I have alot of catching up to do, now I have time that shouldn't be too much of a problem.

 

A few days ago a client from India asked me to recreate his website here: http://minisite-designer.net/ - He managed to knock me down to $40 and we agreed (foolishly) that he pay AFTER I created the site and he was happy with everything. 3 days later I came up with this: http://woodburywebdesign.net/mini-site-designer/ I emailed the client telling him his site was almost complete and requesting that he come on to skype. I used skype because I was wary of this individual possibly grabbing a live site and running off without paying...so I used share screen on skype where he went on to tell me im a terrible web designer - he especially had something against white backgrounds! yes! white backgrounds are the devil. He then sent me an email apologizing for his behaviour and asking me to upload the site...hmmmm I though, has this guy just completely wasted my friggin time?!

sounds like he wants you to upload it so he can nab the code. Just tell him, no money, no upload.

The site you made is fine for $40.

 

I wouldn't waste any more time on it.

Could probably create something more modern looking with plain text in an hour or two (considering the price).

Not questioning the price, but messing with a new client for $40 is hardly profitable, its a good practice when needed, so ye, sometimes it may work.

Thats not an excuse. If you agree to take the work, you have no right to mess it up.

Thats like promising to fix a car for $100 and then returning a 3 wheeled armchair saying "sorry, what did u expect for $100?". Sure it might be as simple as word document, but it shouldnt look messed up.

I did mention I was 7 years behind, no? You say I messed it up.... I disagree, I think its a marked improvement over the site he was asking me to redesign despite the lack of 'modern technology' which in my opinion was not required for this project in the slightest... and for $40 and the time I spent making it, its a steal. Please tell me exactly how I 'messed it up' - constructive criticism please, not just for the sake of it.

 

Now he's seen it, I'd personally remove that link you posted - remember this forum get indexed extremely fast by Google.

 

According to lieto the site is worthless anyway, why bother.

For the money I think you went above and beyond, obviously spent more time on it than most of us would and it's a damn good start.

I think you'll find he doesn't know... constructive isn't his way, he just puts people down.

I appreciate opinions, I don't appreciate people putting down others for no reason. You rarely give reasons or suggestions you just tell people they suck. That's not an constructive, that's just rude.

Everyone got bad projects, doesnt mean that this person suck.

And ye, i do understand i am not going to make a lot of friends this way but i cant see anything rude in being honest. Would love to be more specific whenever i am criticizing something but sometimes just better starting from scratch.

1. Too many colors and fonts that doesnt go well together.

2. Header: too large and empty

3. Main menu: black links doesnt go well on dark green background

4. Packages:

a) Buy now is blury

c) Swoosh has white background

d) check bullets got white background

e) block bot shadow got white background (while all of those are obv on grey)

 

To sum it up there are problems everywhere and i am not sure if it is better then a plain black text on white sheet.

 

 

Nothing personal obviously i said what i saw but then again its just my opinion.

evidently you have completely misread or not read my post at all you criticize http://minisite-designer.net/ which is not my site, it is in fact the site I was asked to redesign. THIS http://woodburywebdesign.net/mini-site-designer/ is the redesign of the above mentioned site of which I agree has a terrible design!

Wow I like it much better! I would pay more than 40.00 for that. A lot cleaner and fresh. I personally like centered sites tho. I could use help with my site as I am not a web designer, just graphics. I agree, no money no code! You'll do fine

I notice this guy you did the site for charges $20 an hour. If that's the case, how many hours does he expect out of you for $40?

 

The answer is 2. What does he expect you to come up with in 2 hours? I think he got a good deal.
