The manufacturerID is created when you create a new 'row' in the table.
 

$manufacturer_id = $this->db->getLastId();
 
The above gives you the id of the row that was just inserted.

That's a risk you take starting a business. Until you have an idea of what goes into creating a site like that and making it function properly you ill never understand how much it costs.
 
facebook employs at very least a few hundred web specialists currently, twitter is about the same. it takes a LOT Of work to design, program, and keep it functional.
 
I fully suggest you do a fair amount of research before you seriously consider taking this on.

You need to invest in a large scale public research project. Which, in itself, is not cheap.
 
@Open Sesame: 8 hours @ £25? There's no way a large scale project would be that simple. I'm pretty sure everyone will agree with me on that.
Work with any design agency and they'll spend more time than that researching the subject, creating a though process that reflects the sights needs and goals and after that's done there's the wire framing etc etc. Even once the actual process of creating the site digitally is under way you've got countless edits and UX research and testing before final sign off.
It's not simply a case of throwing together a pretty page. This is the reason why those types of designers are stuck doing £200 jobs rather than large scale corporate sites.
 
A company i freelance for occasionally just took on a large bulk of work from the BBC and the research budget and time frame is already ten times that of what you mentioned.
 
Of course a smaller scale site will be cheaper but only if it was set-up to fail I'm afraid.
 
To answer the OP's original question, yep it can be hard if you're not in the industry to know what things cost. Hell half the people in the industry come on here asking what they should charge. The best advice i can give you is to break it down in to easily manageable chunks.
 

Research (Yourself or research company)
Plan (yourself but also helps to have a developer and or designer involved)
Wireframe (designer)
UX testing (Designer/Developer/You)
Designs (Designer)
Development (developer)
Testing (you and select group of testers)
Amendements (everyone)
Launch

 
That's the recipe for success.
 
Of course if you wanted to risk it and throw something together and pray then you could prob pick up a combined developer/designer for around £1000 but don'[t expect the site to be secure or scale to meet demand.

Well just to add transparency to this, Al contacted me about a logo which I had played around with (based entirely on one he had made) and uploaded it to my site when I was redesigning it and was wholly intended as a content filler, to see how my site worked with something in the portfolio.
 
The text that accompanied the image wasn't written to give the impression that it was a business, and was simply some junk stuff that I had written to test the formatting (The text used did say that it was for a client, but as most of the work in my portfolio is, I absent-mindedly rambled on about it)
 
It's been removed, along with texts and any reference to the image, and after a swift clear out of my harddrive, it's disappeared into the depths of my no empty recycle bin.
 
I'd like to extend my sincere apologies to Alzer81 for the mistake, and as I'm fully aware that people will think I'm a thieving git, it was an extremely stupid oversight on my behalf.

I am going to be starting up in the new year. In my opinion I am sure it is better to choose your name and then do the marketing. Rather than the other way round.
 
You could call yourself SEXY PORN and get plenty of hits but who is going to hire you for a job with a name like that.

It's like with any business. If I brought in a plumber to fit a bathroom and he says to me 'Right then boss, it's gunna cost ya £400 and then the cost of the bathroom' I wouldn't complain. I wouldn't expect him to absorb the cost of the bathroom.
 
I understand that you want to be affordable, but anything extra like photos and stock images, I always bill the client for. Why should I have to pay for images when it's his leaflet.
 
If they want, they can always take the pictures themselves.

Many moons ago I had the priveliege of working for an elderly lady who at 86 years of age was actively still running her family business and doing the accounts herself. Sharp as a tack and probably knew where the bodies were buried as she had her actual bank manager on speed dial and he came out to see her when she called.

How to deal with difficult clients and contracts should be made a mandatory part of any Web Design course and for those of us who are self taught it's well worth getting to grips with. It helps to think of the legal side of things such as contracts as the programming language for manipulating clients lol!

I'd be quite surprised if you were allowed to use their logos in your portfolio. Considering the amount of NDA's i've signed discussing THAT very issue.

well if you're using filler images from google then yes you are. my images DO pop up in google searches, along with everyone elses on the web. Of which you just said you used in your portfolio without peoples permission.
