Everyone got bad projects, doesnt mean that this person suck. And ye, i do understand i am not going to make a lot of friends this way but i cant see anything rude in being honest. Would love to be more specific whenever i am criticizing something but sometimes just better starting from scratch.

There are many handy skills that you can gain in design academy — drawing by hand, composition, ability to work with fonts (dont know english word), usability basics and many others. Also the ability to learn. Being a designer is just as good job as many others. Advantage — easy to work at home / freelance / outsource Disadvantage — a lot of people are working at home, hence bigger competition. Other then that its just as any other job: fun when you are doing it once a month, not as much fun when you have 5 projects that had to be done by yesterday.

Just love how some people are like "system is not unstable! I mean... it is unstable but you can install something and it will get better". I am using windows7 as well as mac os and really... i had my browser just closing or hanging for no apparent reason with an error under win7. I had my flash cs4 close without any error and that happens weekly. Not that i want to praise macs and mock windows — i will use both regardless but difference seems to be pretty obvious to me and i would never use win7 unless forced by software developers who doesnt support osx. And my expectations towards os are quite modest, i just want it to run my few applications and be stable while doing it without me dancing around it with a virtual screwdriver. Somehow windows does manage to fail at that time to time.

Imo if you dont plan to do any sort of gaming OR editing huge prints in psd then any modern mac model will be powerful enough. From this point there are few options: imac 21.5 — $1199 imac 27 — $1699 macbook pro 13 — $1199 + e-ips 23 inch monitor like Dell u2312HM $250 = $1450 macbook pro 13 — $1199 + professional 27 inch monitor like Dell u2711 $750 = $1950 mac mini — $599 + Dell u2312HM $250 = $850 To sum it up: Imacs will allow some gaming and more powerful in general. However 21.5 is rather small screen for me while 27 is rather expensive for something you can hardly upgrade mac mini is the cheapest option. Macbook pro 13 is good all in one solution if you happen to need a notebook sometimes as well as stationary PC.

Sorry to say it but I wouldn't pay anything for such a website, its terribly outdated indeed. Could probably create something more modern looking with plain text in an hour or two (considering the price). Not questioning the price, but messing with a new client for $40 is hardly profitable, its a good practice when needed, so ye, sometimes it may work. Thats not an excuse. If you agree to take the work, you have no right to mess it up. Thats like promising to fix a car for $100 and then returning a 3 wheeled armchair saying "sorry, what did u expect for $100?". Sure it might be as simple as word document, but it shouldnt look messed up.

It reminded me "hackers" from year 2000 or so. Style aside most important thing in portfolio is "works" and you gave them 10% of screen real estate.

Less people know how and trying to break it = more secure for me. I dont mind that any system potentially got around the same level of security even though linux based system > windows based system on many levels. Also default level of security is higher in mac os. Sure you can setup windows but thats additional head ache.

For me macbook pro 15 + external monitor is the perfect solution. Its great all in one solution. 1) having everything in one place and easy to back up. I mean i carry it home-work-home. 2) powerful enough for everything i need (i got 6750m version) 3) small enough to carry it around — rather light and thin compared to rivals 4) 15 inch screen is enough to show something to a client or work a bit on the fly, cant work on 13 incher 5) I can upgrade monitor as i please 6) I consider mac os X one of the best business investments i did. I know win7 is kinda stable now but even then it does some "unexpected operations". Back then when i was switching WinXP with its glitches and viruses fked me up every other day closing flash / photoshop for no reason etc. I am using mac for six years and it NEVER performed anything unexpected. I never re-installed, was just upgrading, It saved me so much time and what is more important — NERVES over these years. 7) Its decent money investment as well and holds value really good. I sold all my previous macbooks pro for at least 50-60% of its price after 3-4 years. Try selling Acer for 60% after 4 years. I bought it in US so it was even cheaper. So basically whenever i am buying a new mac upgrade cost me around 600-700 pounds. So ye, it seem to fit me just right. Cheapest Macbook pro 13 + external monitor — might be a good and rather inexpensive option for a developer.

Portfolio doesnt need design. It needs works. Its way better then your previous one and its definitely looks more professional. White sheet of paper is generic as well but a lot can be shown on it. Your portfolio is a white sheet of paper to place your works on.

Write project to a CD with a detailed description on how to install it, how to upload it to ftp, how to maintain structure etc In case they do something wrong they will still have that cd.

There are few ways it may go from there: 1. You ll stick to what works for you. 2. You ll try to get more familiar with PS and may as well increase your productivity. Overall there is nothing wrong with going with css/html right away it just looks like you are doing more work then you otherwise could. In best case scenario your way might be faster since you have everything done right away, in worst case scenario (lots of changes) PS way will be faster and since there are changes most of the times most of us prefer "PS way".
