I love being original!

Not much to decide with that avatar of yours :p

You're right, this topic is getting huge! I'm going to go through all the pages at some point and write down all the advice, I keep forgetting what is being suggested like Dusty's post – sorry mate!

Don't stop this from offering more advice, though. Currently the website is going through a bumpy patch while I develop a new idea with the content headings, so please expect some broken-ness for the time being :)

The design is amazing, I think it's totally fab!!! Wish I could produce designs like that...

You might want to check it out in Firefox though (only a small thing don't panic) around...

Hi Jenski, thanks for the comments. I'm currently fiddling with the headings so you might notice things breaking.

  • Author

I need some quick opinions…

I've been currently working on the heading styling, so far I have 2 options:

Blue text - http://nibor.co.uk/discovery/

…or…

Red banners - http://nibor.co.uk/discovery/about/

I've hit a bit of a wall re: inspiration for this area.

Blue text.

The red banner makes things to crowded. The blue text looks nice and clean.

You already have a lot goin on with stars, spaceships, logo and the now missing header. Red flags is just to much

  • Author

Thanks for the comments, I agree that the red banner makes things too busy. I've always loved the clean feel of the blue text, I just need to work out what to do to make it stand out more as a headline.

It's probebly to long a headline to make it blod without it looking to bulky.

Maybe you can undeline with with a 1px red line ( the same red as the spaceship or something).

or something like this :p but thenk again that might make it to chaotic.

I've removed all the red banners for now, definitely looks much better without them. One of my worst design decisions that one!

I'll have a play around with the headings and see what I can do.

I'm not sure what this implies but when I stuck the "[http://]nibor[.co.uk]/discovery/" into the address and hit enter by mistake, the first entry I got on the search page that appeared was:

"Man sues over penis tattoo | Metro.co.uk"

That's going to create some interesting Google results!

ROB!

Stop working on your headings before it drives you insane! Your biggest problem is that you want your site to be perfect, and you are judging perfection by your own standards. Unfortunately, your standards are even higher than the rocket on your site, and they're always being pushed higher.

Like I said earlier, you can't reinvent the wheel - you can just make a better wheel.

Stop worrying so much about your headers, and think about the bigger picture. What purpose do the headers have? Does it REALLY make that much of a difference whether they are red or blue? If they do their job well, it doesn't matter what colour they are, so stop agonising over the tiny little thanks what will make you insane.

Your site is brilliant, and deep down I think you realise it. You just don't want to accept it. :p

I've been working on something today that I'd like to throw out to you lot and test the water.

The new feature is the footer on the blog page.

The change in colour/noise at the bottom of the page is back, and you need to get rid of the big blank space :p

Posting this in the right thread now!

I'm loving the footer! Was that always like that or have you just added that indentation - looks great! Maybe when I'm back online at the end of May you'll have this site finished!

I thought you might've put it in the wrong one, I didn't wanna be big headed and say it outright though :blush1:

The indentation/underground of the footer is something I thought of over the weekend and which I put into the layout today.

There is mainly little tweaks and content left so I'm sure you'll see a polished website by the time your internets is connected :D

It's a big compliment hearing that you like it, thanks E!

On the blog page, you know how your banner image is blurred? I think it looks really great having the contents of the banner itself blurred, but I think it would have much more of an impact if the edges of the image stayed crisp?

Hi Rod

good site, but most of all your logo is pleasant to me ;)

Thanks for the comment, I've been switching between the super crisp edges and blurry edges for a while now. I'm going to leave it as it is for the time being and see how I feel before release otherwise I seem to end up spending all my time fiddling with tiny details :(

Hi Rod

good site, but most of all your logo is pleasant to me ;)

Thank you Tehi! ^_^

I really gotta say, you did a great job. I tried to make a similar sort of website (with a repeating space background up near the top and a Super Mario level on the bottom), but I just couldn't get it to work. I'm happy to see that someone pulled it off. Everything works together very well.

I keep waiting to comment - waiting until I can think of something interesting/useful to say - but I'm yet to come up with anything particularly sparky beyond "bloody good job".

The details are amazing.. every little pixel of each illustration looks like it should be there, not just slapped together (ala my stuff ;)) and I think the typography works really well. It's cute and visually interesting without being childish or over the top.

Thank you! It's been hard work but it's nice to hear that you think I've managed to achieve it.

Thanks for the lovely comments Jem! I was half expecting you to shoot me down in flames… j/k ^_^

Me obviously! :o

Yeah, that'd be my 'meanie-head' reputation.. B)

Ooooh! I just spotted something I think could be looked at!!!!!

It's to do with copy but nothing to do with copy!

It's one of the teeny-weeny little things that drive you nuts!

With the font you're using in the headers is it me or do all the letter 'a' look a little below the baseline of the rest and the 'tail' too close kerning-wise? It makes the text look a tiny bit scruffy and that incy bit less clear.

Oh, come-on at least I tried!!!! I can't just wait to be let loose on your copy you know! :D

Which headers are we talking about? Also do you have ClearType on?

The big white ones in the main header. e.g. 'I don't do templates'. Which are images though.

Sorry - should have made that clearer - but it's getting near to 3am and bedtime! Maybe it's just my tired eyes.

That's my old site, which is being scrapped for the new "spacey" layout when it's finsihed.

:fool:

That's it... I'm going to bed! Would you believe I swore I could see rockets! :D Shows how much I pay attention to non-critical stuff (i.e. everything that isn't copy!).

Luckily the 'live' work I have to stay-up to do for the UK is about to change to the US so I can do it in the morning and not late at night.

Sorry Rob - just like to keep you on your toes! I was just going through the site's I admire and their feedback for inspiration on the 'right2web 2.0 battle-plan' and thought I'd try to bug you whilst I admired your site!

Going to bed now to dream of rockets and stars and pink moonscapes.... :lazy:

I really like the general concept and the design is great. However I think the headings don´t work well enough. I think the blue colour could be a bit bolder and I think the sidebar headings should not be all caps.

I think something like this would work better, what do you think?

rawkesoi8.jpg

Ah Rawkes - always a pleasure to look through such a great design.

I even looked at it during the day so I got the right site this time!

It's looking better than ever, although

*whispers quietly...

I agree with Brynjar that the style of the headers are just off your high standards, but... before you rush to fix them -

... (thanks Rachael!)*

Wizely's powered-up, definitely not set to stun and ready to boost your copy up to match your design (and, obviously, score with any cute alien chicks should the need arise).

Not one for flaunting my immense talents or other's dirty laundry in public - I'll be PMing you before you even wake up!

One last chance to save yourself from the corporate rat race - get on a flight to NZ and we can join forces. And, while we build our empire there'll be skiing and activities aplenty! Rent free fantastic lifestyle living, a great business venture and, should there be someone you know coming over here - then it's all good! Come over to the dark side. I am our father! Moo-ha-ha-ha!

*whispers* DON'T MENTION THE HEADERS! *whispers*

I'm afraid it's to late now, Headers probably won't be done before next Website of the month competition :p

The headers still bug me as well. Until I come up with something else I will probably release the site with the current ones otherwise I will never release the website.

I like your idea, I will consider it when I get round to the headers again, thank you.

Thanks for the kind words Wizely, I'm glad you found the right website this time!

I'm in agreement with the headers, but I think I will get more ideas once the content is finalised – wink wink, nudge nudge!

I'll so take you up on that offer, sounds like heaven! You pay for the flights and I'll be there like a shot. (ps. I didn't know it was possible to be your own father! :o)

Headers…? Did someone mention headers?!!!?

I'm afraid it's to late now, Headers probably won't be done before next Website of the month competition :p

I've decided to put back the release of Rawkes for 2 more months so I can finished the headers! Nah, if the content gets finished in time then I will be releasing Rawkes before next months competition ;)

No. No one mentioned the header. Nada. Nuh uh. No they didn't. You must have just been imagining it, because I did NOT see anyone mention the headers. At all.
